Democrats Sweep Congress as ETH Climbs, Morgan Stanley Tokenizes | ethereum.miami

Democrats won control of both the House and Senate in yesterday's midterm elections, triggering a sharp selloff in crypto that reversed almost as quickly as it began. ETH sits at $2,327.80, up 2.82% over 24 hours, after riding the same V-shaped recovery that pulled Bitcoin from a seven-week low of $75,618 back above $78,300. DeFi tokens led the rebound. Trump-linked coins did not.

The Midterm Trade

The Democratic sweep hands committee gavels to a caucus that has been broadly skeptical of light-touch crypto regulation. House committees change hands in January 2027, giving Democrats subpoena power and the ability to reshape oversight priorities around digital assets, stablecoin legislation, and exchange licensing. The market's initial reaction was a flush: nearly $300 million in long liquidations within 24 hours, and Bitcoin ETFs shed $1.16 billion in outflows.

The recovery came fast. Bitcoin's surge past $78,000 as uncertainty cleared suggests the selloff was more about positioning than conviction. Bitwise's André Dragosch characterized the ETF outflows as short-term, noting that institutional holders largely held their positions. The pattern fits: sell the event, buy the clarity.

One Polymarket trader turned the blue wave into $917,000 in profit, topping the platform's leaderboard, though a potential Alaska flip could still unwind the bet.

Morgan Stanley Tokenizes Equities and Treasurys

Morgan Stanley announced it is among the first major banks to convert US equities and Treasury securities into tokenized form, using DTCC's new Tokenization Service launched October 28. The move puts one of Wall Street's largest wealth managers on record as a tokenization adopter, not just a theorist.

The DTCC service, called DTS, provides a standardized layer for converting traditional securities into digital representations. Morgan Stanley's participation signals that tokenization infrastructure is crossing from pilot programs to production workflows at scale. The bank manages over $1.2 trillion in client assets, making even a modest allocation to tokenized instruments meaningful for liquidity and settlement speed.

Binance Hack: $6.3B Aftermath

The fallout from the record $6.3 billion Binance hack continued as attackers moved 81% of the stolen Solana and routed funds through THORChain after the cross-chain protocol resumed swaps. The laundering pace is aggressive, and on-chain analysts are tracking the flow in near-real time.

Grayscale's Zach Pandl called the breach a "temporary setback," pointing to institutional custody safeguards that most major platforms have adopted since the exchange collapses of 2022. The framing is optimistic, perhaps too optimistic for the largest single hack in crypto history. Whether exchanges accelerate migration toward institutional-grade custody solutions from providers like Fireblocks will be a defining question for the next quarter.

French Bank Loses $133M in Covered-Up Crypto Theft

On-chain investigator ZachXBT identified Crédit Mutuel Arkéa, a French cooperative bank, as the alleged victim of a $133 million theft from crypto exchange accounts. ZachXBT claims the bank has been covering up the incident, and that the lack of public disclosure allowed more than $30 million to be laundered before accounts could be frozen.

Crypto.com confirmed it blocked funds linked to the theft on its platform. The case highlights a persistent tension: traditional financial institutions entering crypto markets without the transparency norms those markets demand.

Block's $764M Bill

Jack Dorsey's Block is negotiating a $764 million settlement with the Department of Justice to resolve a federal anti-money-laundering investigation. The company simultaneously reported that its quarterly bitcoin gross profit fell 50%, driven by lower trading fees on Cash App. The combination paints a difficult picture: regulatory costs rising as the revenue that justified the risk declines.

Magic City: Tokenization Finds Its Natural Habitat

Morgan Stanley's tokenization push has a direct line to Miami. The city's real estate market, already one of the most active tokenization testing grounds in the country, stands to benefit from any Wall Street normalization of tokenized assets. Homebase, the Miami-based platform focused on tokenizing residential real estate, has been operating in exactly this gap between institutional interest and retail access.

The midterm results also matter locally. Miami-Dade's tech and finance corridor has grown partly on the assumption of a friendlier federal regulatory environment for digital assets. A Democratic Congress could complicate that narrative, particularly around stablecoin legislation and exchange registration requirements that several Miami-based firms have been building against. The city's Web3 community, concentrated in Wynwood and Brickell, will be watching January's committee assignments closely.

On the events front, Miami's position as a year-round crypto hub means the next wave of conferences and builder meetups will carry a different tone than the ones held during the more permissive regulatory window. Builders shipping on Ethereum L2s and RWA platforms from Miami offices face the same federal uncertainty as everyone else, but with a local government that has been more willing than most to experiment.
