Episode #5a - Postscript
OK, so maybe sending newsletters from the hospital requires just as much careful editing as any other kind of writing...
I worried some of you. Sorry about that.
Rereading Episode 5 I realize I left out some important details, like I've regained almost of all of my functions in the past week. One of the things about Central Cord Syndrome is that you regain function from the bottom up, so my feet started working again within a few minutes of the accident and I've been slowly regaining more ever since. I get up (with a spotter), I can move around, I can dress myself, type (slowly), and I walked all the way around the exterior of the building the other day unassisted. Every day more comes back.
So if you were imagining me prostate in a hospital bed hooked up to a zillion things, you can dispose of that mental image and instead think of me at the occupational therapy table trying to pinch M&M's with my thumb and forefinger and get them in my mouth, looking like a cross between a drunk and a baby as I try to steer my fingers into my mouth. Much more accurate.
In short, I'm doing very well and plan to do better. And the prognosis is good. I'm at one of the best rehabs in the country and they are working me like a dog, 3 to 4 hours of physical therapy or occupational therapy every day. It will be a long, long recovery process, but I should be out of here in another week or so and back at work as much as possible. There’s loads to do!
