Putting on Your Mittens
On warmth.
My son will put his hand out flat, fingers all held together, and let me slip his gloves on, one and then the other. I put them on backward once, right on left and left on right. He clapped, mixed-up thumbs pointing off in the wrong directions. Laughed and smiled so big like, mama look what you’ve done.

I’ll worry he’s getting cold. Lately, my breath comes out clouds under the street light as we’re biking home. But when I turn to look back while we’re stopped at the corner, I see him waving. Two big happy cartoon hands, Keep going!
P.S. Enthusiasms is off next week for some holiday downtime. Stay tuned for a hit from the archives.
If you’re doing the Thanksgiving thing, wishing you a very good one–and if not, well, also wishing you a very good one of that, too. <3 J
