FUCK ICE
I had something in the works for this, the first Enthusiasm of the year, and then the year happened and it didn’t feel like the right words anymore.
A friend in Minneapolis just sent me this video. Looks like thousands have come together for a vigil after an ICE agent shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good. This was my neighborhood for several years before coming to Portland.

Renee Nicole Good was a mother, a poet, someone who had come out to protect her community—one, it seems, that she and her family were new to, a fact that didn’t dissuade them from helping where they could. I don’t think calling attention to the fact that she was a US citizen minimizes the violence against those who aren’t. If anything, it makes clear what, perhaps, Renee and her wife believed, being out there that day, before she was murdered. It doesn’t make a difference. The only way forward is together.
Renee was a beautiful writer, and her award-winning poem is here. Also, this GoFundMe for her wife and son has been verified, if that’s the kind of thing you’re able to do.
