📰 News this Week
📝 City of Edinburgh Council Transport Convener writes to Scottish Government for Powderhall Link backing
“Ten years after the Powderhall railway line was closed, the SNP offered support for the conversion of the former line to an active travel route as one of their manifesto pledges during this year’s Holyrood election.
”On Friday, Cllr Stephen Jenkinson has written to Transport Secretary, Stephen Flynn, asking the government to confirm their commitment to support the transformation of the line into Leith’s answer to New York’s High Line.” — more in this excellent article by The Edinburgh Reporter
This marks a significant milestone for the project, particularly as the grassroots campaign Powderhall.Link gets a mention of recognition by the Transport Convener directly.
It’s great to see momentum here, and the next few months will be crucial in terms of how this route will unfold.
⚠️ George IV Bridge: Don’t worry, signage will fix it
Following the temporary pedestrian overflow around Greyfriars Bobby being installed in place of a safe cycleway, the Council have now managed to implement some signage ahead of the obstruction warning drivers not to overtake. The additional pedestrian space is of course welcome, and necessary until the city takes the real crowd management step needed in relocating Bobby into the churchyard of Greyfriar’s Kirk — but should never have been implemented in such a slap-dash way on one of the busiest cycle routes in the city, with no inherent safety affordances for those continuing to cycle through it.
Of course, this intervention still only consists of:
‘Table stakes’ minimum signage that still doesn’t really address the danger that’s been introduced - and is placed really too close to the pinch point for taking the lane or to sufficiently warn motorists;
Signage that takes space away from pedestrians in order to inform motor traffic, an ongoing issue across the city;
A raw and road-works-esque approach that uses ugly temporary signage in the midst of a World Heritage Site, at a time when we have a huge number of visitors to the city (many other cycle affordances here, like an advanced stop zone or ‘bike box’ and early release signal at the Forrest Rd lights, would have been more effective and more attractive);
Basic safety interventions that only seem to have been taken after Spokes mobilised to point out the dangers, when there are a myriad of officers and designers within the Council’s own ranks that could have point out that chucking some kerbs and asphalt in one of the city’s busiest cycle lanes might have an impact on safe transit by bike, and put the necessary mitigations in place before or during the initial works.
It is not only possible to manage the city’s cycle network better than this, it’s essential to.

👀 In response to the reopening of North Bridge with nary a cycle affordance to be seen, reader Danielle sent this excellent missive looking at Utrecht in the Netherlands which used to look pretty similar in places!
🚌 As the closure of Princes Street wears on following a major fire — extended by at least another week on original estimates, reports the Herald, likely more as assessment of the historic building continues — the Edinburgh Minute this week published a solid summary of the diversions Lothian Buses are hoping will ease congestion and journey times, diverting away from the bottleneck. Meanwhile, the Edinburgh Bus Users Group have again written an open letter this time asking that a portion of the £5m fire relief monies coming to the Council from the Scottish Government to deal with the aftermath and associated disruption be used to implement temporary stops and bus prioritisation measures, particularly in lieu of trams running down to Leith.

⛔ Following the reopening of The King’s Theatre in Tollcross, Tarvit Street is to gain modal filters and be a street for walking, cycling and stage door loading during performances, with a significant reduction in parking and motor vehicles as a result. Here’s how that’s going:
Tarvit St has been closed to cars between Drumdryan St and Home St for years during the theatre refurbishment - and in theory, it’s still closed to them. Hopefully the Council team dealing with this can get some more substantial planters / filters in place that can’t just be chucked aside by folks ignoring the prohibitions.

⚡ News of a possible ebike parking ban at some NHS properties posted to local Facebook group ‘Corstorphine Chat’ this week, worryingly:
“I am NHS employee working in an NHS Lothian premises up near the Art College.
“We have been sent an email stating we are no longer allowed to store any ebike near the build or surroundings due to fire risk.
”Is there anyone else working already in an NHS site that is able to store your ebike and what is the options provided?
“I cannot understand how cars, motorbikes, and all other personal equipment containing a lithium battery are allowed in site?
”They promote the cycle to work scheme within the NHS. If I were to take the bus I would be doubling at least the time onto my journey. Which would be challenging with childcare pick ups”
This is very similar to Network Rail’s ban on ebikes at all stations; in short, there is a very low risk of fires from ebikes from reputable manufacturers with battery management systems, which arguably make up the majority of ebikes in use. But, because it is straightforward enough (and legal enough) to buy cheap or to cobble your own together from parts of dubious provenance, we’re seeing these blanket bans having a serious impact on the feasibility of cycling as a transport choice, where a small risk of danger is driving poor policy.
🩷 News on a Vie Velo fundraiser From edi.bike supporter Tracy:
One of my valued personal training clients is 84 year old Colin Stamp, who in his younger years was a formidable cyclist. In 2023 he had an accident where he totally lost the vision in his left eye, and only has 30% vision remaining in his right eye. Having moved to Edinburgh the following year, Colin has been building up his strength with Griffen Fitness. Colin recently discovered Vie Velo, a tandem club for visually impaired people. In Colin's words: "I can't believe that at 84 I'm back on a bike again. It's great!"
It's been so rewarding to see Colin's confidence and balance improving by going out regularly on the back of a tandem. He's a man that relishes a challenge, and officially as the oldest person in Vie Velo, he's cycling 100km to raise money for the club. It's a worthy cause! You can sponsor him at Just Giving.

🏝️ Robbie will be having a well-earned break over the next fortnight or so - so these road closures won’t be updated for the next couple of weeks.
✅ Duddingston Low Road: Pavement open again following Scottish Power repair works.
🚶♂️ Forrest Road: Cycle lane obstructed by temporary pavement buildout at Candlemaker Row until end of August. Warnings signs have been added but beware of vehicles overtaking at this road narrowing.
🚧 Duncan Place: Road closed for closed for construction of raised tables at crossings, obstructing walking and cycling paths across Leith Links. Works are expected to conclude tomorrow, Tuesday 11th August. It is possible to cross the closed carriageway away from the crossing.
🚧 Grange Road: Toucan crossings at Tantallon Pl and Lauder Rd on Quietroute 6 obstructed for Scottish Power ducting installation from today, Monday 10th August, for 6 weeks.
🚧 Newbattle Terrace: Closed west of Canaan Ln for Scottish Power ducting installation from this Wednesday 12th August for 6 weeks. Greenbank to Meadows Quietroute should not be affected but beware of construction vehicles.
🚧 Dundee Street: Segregated cycle lanes between Viewforth and Gilmore Park obstructed by temporary traffic lights for Scottish Power substation works from today Monday 10th August for 8 weeks.
🚧 Chesser Avenue: Cycle lanes closed at New Mart Rd outside O2 Academy for Vodaphone works expected to be complete this Wednesday 12th August
Festival Closures:
🎪 Hill Square: close Hill Place westbound from 14th July until end Aug but cycle access will be maintained. Be aware of temporary road signage in the contraflow cycle lane westbound and an increase in pedestrians. Nearby Roxburgh Place will also be closed, which may create a pleasant low traffic area.
🎪 Summertime Streets: Expanded closures for the August festivals this year. High St closed from 10:30am daily. Lawnmarket closed and Cowgate closed daily from 3pm, however access will be maintained for loading. Cycle access on Cockburn Street Between North Bridge and Waverley Bridge expected to be retained. Exercise caution and consider dismounting if you can on High Street.
❌ George Street: Annual closure for Fringe Festival cancelled due to bus diversion following Princes St fire closure.
Long Term Closures:
🏞️ Holyrood Park High Road: Closed due to recent rockfall. A short dismount is necessary to avoid a fenced off area.
🏖️ Silverknowes Road: Road to Silverknowes Beach closed for resurfacing works and reconfiguration of the cycle lane. Works stalled again and expected to re-open after the summer.
🚒 Princes Street: Section between Frederick St and S Charlotte St closed into August following a building fire. At time of writing, it is necessary to dismount walk through the gardens to pass. George St may offer an alternate route.
🌉 St Marks Path: Bridge over Water of Leith closed due to structural issues. The road bridge at Warriston Rd or pedestrian bridge at Beaverhall Rd may offer alternate routes.
🌉 Harrison Road: Bridges closed due to structural concerns with micro-cracking in the original cast iron beams. The north-west bridge over a small path is closed for rebuilding until end August 2026, including the path below. The south-east bridge over the Union Canal is currently closed pedestrians and cyclists whilst kerbs are altered.
🌉 Water of Leith Path: Kinauld Tan Works Footbridge by Currie closed due to a hole in the bridge deck. A diversion is suggested via Lanark Rd, which may be unsuitable.
🎾 Gyle Park: Path between Glenmuir Rd and Glasgow Rd closed until the end of October 2026 for construction work. If you’re heading to Tesco, the path by David Lloyd gym may offer an alternate route.
🚦 Bankhead Drive: Quietroute 8 along the tramline obstructed at junction with S Gyle Access until late Summer 2026 for construction of West Edinburgh Link.
🏗️ Edinburgh Park Station: Quiet Route 8 cycle path between Hermiston Gait and the Gyle Centre closed for works in preparation of the Edinburgh Arena development. It’s only possible to go around by carrying your bike up roughly 20 steps or by following the shared use footway on Lochside Ave.
🏗️ Port Hamilton Cyclepath: Shared use path between Union Canal and West End closed until 2026/27 for building works. A diversion is advised via Gardeners Crescent and Semple Street.
🏗️ Craighall Road: Closed until May 2028 for the Refurbishment of Trinity Academy. Access to the Victoria Path is expected to be maintained. A diversion will be signed along Newhaven Road, however the removal of parking for improved traffic flow may lead to this being a wider and faster road, less suitable for cycles.

⚙️ The 2026 Spokes AGM will be held in the Studio at the Augustine United Church (below the Sanctuary where we have our public meetings) on Weds 9th September, evening.
As well as standard AGM reports on activity and finances, members will consider whether Spokes should become a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) and therefore change from being a constituted organisation to a charity.
There will also be a short performance about cycling and a discussion about Spokes priorities. More information about the AGM and the SCIO proposal will be sent out to members in advance of the AGM.

🚲 The Bike Station - can you volunteer with us? 🚲
Help us make cycling more accessible and connect people with the joy of a bicycle. We have a fantastic team of volunteers who support us in many ways, so please do reach out if you'd like to be part of the team.
🛠️ Fix Your Own Bike volunteers:
Our main requirement for volunteers at the moment are volunteers to help support on our Fix Your Own Bike (FYOB) sessions; notably those able to support the Saturday sessions which run from weekly 1-4pm.
The ideal candidate would be someone with extensive bike maintenance experience and someone who would feel comfortable articulating ideas and advice to members of the public. These sessions are a valuable resource for shared learning, lower cost self repairs and are a great community addition to the Edinburgh cycling landscape. Being volunteer-led, we cannot keep up with demand without the brilliant team that helps to operate the sessions.

As a volunteer you not only join a community of like-minded individuals passionate about cycling - you can also access bikes, parts and accessories at a discounted price as well as heavily discounted maintenance courses after 6 months of volunteering.
📦 Edinburgh charity Goodies are offering free Cargo Bike training for those looking to volunteer with them in their food redistribution work:
Our head rider Fabian will be doing cargo bike training every Wednesday starting 17:30 at the Meadows, next to the East Meadows play park.
This is for anyone who would like to volunteer as a food rider in the evenings during the week.

❤️ Charlotte’s Tandems are looking for help in Edinburgh:
We lend, throughout the UK, at no cost (i.e. for free), tandems and tag-alongs (trailer bikes) to (and only to) people with disabilities or additional needs, who are unable to ride a bike safely on their own, so that they can enjoy the wonders of cycling.
In other words we provide all-ability, adapted, inclusive cycling for adults and children who are disabled, have special needs, SEN, SEND or impairments, such as Autism, Down's Syndrome, visual impairments, learning or physical difficulties.
They’ve published a Facebook post in which they are seeking a new ‘helper’ in Edinburgh - you can read about this role here, and a commenter shared:
As a former helper in Edinburgh, there are a couple of things you need to know if you are interested in taking this on.
You need to be able store several tandems when they are not being used.
The riding skills of who want to borrow a tandem are highly variable, so you may need to try to teach them how to ride a tandem, which is not like riding a solo bike.
If you can help, do get in touch with them.

📋 The Council’s consultation report for Barnton Connections has now been published, and is available to read on the project website;
🎭 With works on the refurbishment of the King’s Theatre concluded, but commencement on the build of this ‘missing link’ cycle route not due until next year, there were concerns that potentially Tarvit Street — part of the new route and closed to motor traffic for around four years during works on the theatre — might be reopened to through-traffic and add to an already busy junction and close again shortly afterwards. Instead, a modal filter will be installed at the junction of Tarvit St and Drumdryan St — which will be made one-way — so motor traffic will only be permitted one-way round a loop of Tarvit westbound, Drumdryan north and then east, returning to Brougham St - with two-way cycling allowed on both arms of the loop. — More details [PDF] »

🤔 The ‘Curriehill Active Travel Link’ reported by Spokes to have been delayed beyond its 2025 due date by ‘biodiversity concerns’.
