🚊 Princes St disruption for Trams to Newhaven sees Voi bike fleet increased
As the closure of Princes St following a major fire rolls on into August — disruption that saw the transport Convener this week quipping that were it up to him he’d “knock the building down and get the road reopened ASAP” — The Edinburgh Minute broke the news that Voi would be adding to the city’s ebike hire fleet to help counter the tram and bus issues being caused:
🚲 Voi plans to increase its fleet of hire bikes from 800 to 1000 bikes by the end of this week. Additional bike parking infrastructure is being arranged in the city centre to accommodate those travelling into the city from Leith and Newhaven. — The Edinburgh Minute
Welcome news - in a week that also saw The Scotsman reveal that the “Edinburgh scheme, which has started as a two-year pilot in September, has recorded more than 977,000 rides. It is also expected to be extended to more of the city in time for the start of the Edinburgh Festival next month…”
🎉 Work on the Causey finally begins
New from The Edinburgh Reporter - A campaign to change the space at the junction of West Crosscauseway, Nicolson Street, Chapel Street and Buccleuch Street has been running for just short of two decades – and, eventually, the first phase is underway:
“...works begin to reverse the flow of traffic, rubber kerb partitions and wands will be installed on the road with signage and road markings to reduce through traffic. Two -way cycling will be introduced and residents parking outside Buccleuch Church will be instated at Buccleuch Place forming a protected triangular pedestrian zone.”
While these initial changes are being implemented with temporary materials and signage, this is a welcome step for a natural communal public realm space in the southside to start to take shape - after a long and gruelling push — since 2007! — by local campaigners to get it taken seriously.

Announcements of new ‘two-stage right-turn’ interventions at the newly resurfaced junction of Melville Dr / Hope Pk Ter and Summerhall Cres / Hope Pk Cres were met with a degree of anger on the Council’s Bluesky post this week — likely in part because the accompanying video manages to make a bit of a meal of explaining a fairly simple safe route, as well as insinuate that use of it is designated (i.e. mandatory for cyclists turning right); but also that for all of the disruption and time that the works have taken at Summerhall, it’s remarkable how little change has actually been delivered at a major junction.
What we’re seeing in the replies is a mix of folks who have watched the video and think the maneuvre is slower, less intuitive (particularly to onlooking drivers) and inconvenient, those who (wrongly) believe it’s being mandated for all cycle users, and those who are expressing their frustration at the snail’s pace at which even minor changes like this are delivered in the city, with little to no impact on the primacy of car use. As some have pointed out, this junction could well have been a good candidate for a CYCLOPS.
There is latent demand for cycling from folks who don’t do it already, and there is also latent demand for long-overdue infrastructure from existing cyclists that’s actually good, and properly prioritises cycling and walking — and unfortunately most of what’s been delivered at Summerhall could be considered ‘table stakes’ rather than the significant improvement that could have been.
The junction appears to now offer ‘early release’ cycle signals, giving a head-start across the junction to waiting bikes ahead of general traffic. This is great to see, and should be standard at every crossroads - and seeing kerbed segregation replace the tired black and white ‘rosehill defender’ units is also very much welcome. And, while many of us who are confident cycling in traffic might make a more time-efficient right-turn as usual, having a two-stage option for less experienced or less confident cycle users can only be a good thing (provided the changes are communicated well to drivers, too…). So why are folks upset? Because for real change to the safety of vulnerable road users, there needs to be more than the basics delivered from major projects.
Here’s hoping the teams behind this work at the Council can see there’s a bigger problem with Edinburgh’s deathly slow rollout of vital infrastructure, and read between the lines of feedback they’re receiving to understand the strength of feeling the kilometre-per-year rate of new development engenders amongst those who sorely need it.

🔨 “Fears popular cycle route could be closed for years after 'serious' structural issues found in bridge” covered in the Evening News this week, as a local coffee stall owner who depends on the foot and cycle traffic on St. Mark’s Path made an impassioned plea on his business’s Instagram for swift action from the Council to get the bridge repaired or an alternative in place. And indeed, this is a reasonable ask given how many folks depend on this safe route to avoid nearby roads with little to no affordances for safe passage walking and cycling - there are currently no good alternatives (roll on Powderhall.Link).
The issues with the bridge are indeed serious, structurally speaking; this is no ruse - but those with a keen eye on how things get done ‘round these parts have observed it would be pretty convenient for the Council and the developers of the former Powderhall bowling green site immediately next to the path to take roughly as long as the new housing construction takes to get the route reopened…
🏆 Great news on Facebook that A Wee Pedal — based out of community hub Bridgend Farmhouse in the south-east of the city — are finalists for a Thistle Award in September:

🅿️ A welcome update on cycling parking at Valleyfield Street and the King’s Theatre environs, following the public realm and resurfacing projects for the theatre reopening; from the project team —
“Apologies for the delay in reinstating the cycle stands throughout the scheme extents. Our contractor had an issue when ordering them and we have only recently received the replacements. I’m in the process of coordinating when we will be able to install them, but we are hopefully that installation will happen towards the end of next week.”

⚙️ The 2026 Spokes AGM will be held in the Studio at the Augustine United Church (below the Sanctuary where we have our public meetings) on Weds 9th September, evening.
As well as standard AGM reports on activity and finances, members will consider whether Spokes should become a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) and therefore change from being a constituted organisation to a charity.
There will also be a short performance about cycling and a discussion about Spokes priorities. More information about the AGM and the SCIO proposal will be sent out to members in advance of the AGM.

🏞️ Duddingston Low Road: Pavement closed for Scottish Power repair works until 7th August. It is not possible to walk through, and diversion is necessary via the Innocent Railway Path.
🚧 West Granton Access: Road closed to remove redundant telecoms equipment from today, Monday 27th July for 2 days. Shared use pedestrian and cycle path expected to be closed. Pennywell Rd may offer an alternate route.
🚧 Newbattle Terrace: Section of road on Greenbank to Meadows Quiet Route closed for Scottish Power repairs. At time of writing, it is possible to pass the works.

🚧 Chesser Avenue: Cycle lanes closed at New Mart Rd outside O2 Academy for Vodaphone works from Thursday 6th August for 1 week.
Festival Closures:
🎪 Hill Square: close Hill Place westbound from 14th July until end Aug but cycle access will be maintained. Be aware of temporary road signage in the contraflow cycle lane westbound and an increase in pedestrians. Nearby Roxburgh Place will also be closed, which may create a pleasant low traffic area.
🎪 Summertime Streets: Expanded closures for the August festivals this year. High St closed from 10:30am daily. Lawnmarket closed and Cowgate closed daily from 3pm, however access will be maintained for loading. Cycle access on Cockburn Street Between North Bridge and Waverley Bridge expected to be retained. Exercise caution and consider dismounting if you can on High Street.
❌ George Street: Annual closure for Fringe Festival cancelled due to bus diversion following Princes St fire closure.
Long Term Closures:
🏞️ Holyrood Park High Road: Closed due to recent rockfall. A short dismount is necessary to avoid a fenced off area. Update 27th July: Pavement may be obstructed this week, potentially until Wednesday 29th July, preventing a dismount.
🏖️ Silverknowes Road: Road to Silverknowes Beach closed for resurfacing works and reconfiguration of the cycle lane until mid-August. Update 27th July: Works stalled due to an unknown water source destabilising ground under the road.
🚒 Princes Street: Section between Frederick St and S Charlotte St closed into August following a building fire. At time of writing, it is necessary to dismount walk through the gardens to pass. George St may offer an alternate route.
🌉 St Marks Path: Bridge over Water of Leith closed due to structural issues. The road bridge at Warriston Rd or pedestrian bridge at Beaverhall Rd may offer alternate routes.
🌉 Harrison Road: Bridges closed due to structural concerns with micro-cracking in the original cast iron beams. The north-west bridge over a small path is closed for rebuilding until end August 2026, including the path below. The south-east bridge over the Union Canal is currently closed pedestrians and cyclists whilst kerbs are altered.
🌉 Water of Leith Path: Kinauld Tan Works Footbridge by Currie closed due to a hole in the bridge deck. A diversion is suggested via Lanark Rd, which may be unsuitable.
🎾 Gyle Park: Path between Glenmuir Rd and Glasgow Rd closed until the end of October 2026 for construction work. If you’re heading to Tesco, the path by David Lloyd gym may offer an alternate route.
🚦 Bankhead Drive: Quietroute 8 along the tramline obstructed at junction with S Gyle Access until late Summer 2026 for construction of West Edinburgh Link.
🏗️ Edinburgh Park Station: Quiet Route 8 cycle path between Hermiston Gait and the Gyle Centre closed for works in preparation of the Edinburgh Arena development. It’s only possible to go around by carrying your bike up roughly 20 steps or by following the shared use footway on Lochside Ave.
🏗️ Port Hamilton Cyclepath: Shared use path between Union Canal and West End closed until 2026/27 for building works. A diversion is advised via Gardeners Crescent and Semple Street.
🏗️ Craighall Road: Closed until May 2028 for the Refurbishment of Trinity Academy. Access to the Victoria Path is expected to be maintained. A diversion will be signed along Newhaven Road, however the removal of parking for improved traffic flow may lead to this being a wider and faster road, less suitable for cycles.
⚡ Ongoing: The questionable Network Rail ban on ebike parking at Waverley Station - best to make alternative parking plans if travelling from this station at present.

📦 Edinburgh charity Goodies are offering free Cargo Bike training for those looking to volunteer with them in their food redistribution work:
Our head rider Fabian will be doing cargo bike training every Wednesday starting 17:30 at the Meadows, next to the East Meadows play park.
This is for anyone who would like to volunteer as a food rider in the evenings during the week.
We will also be signing T&C's that will be required before you can ride.

❤️ Charlotte’s Tandems are looking for help in Edinburgh:
We lend, throughout the UK, at no cost (i.e. for free), tandems and tag-alongs (trailer bikes) to (and only to) people with disabilities or additional needs, who are unable to ride a bike safely on their own, so that they can enjoy the wonders of cycling.
In other words we provide all-ability, adapted, inclusive cycling for adults and children who are disabled, have special needs, SEN, SEND or impairments, such as Autism, Down's Syndrome, visual impairments, learning or physical difficulties.
They’ve published a Facebook post in which they are seeking a new ‘helper’ in Edinburgh - you can read about this role here, and a commenter shared:
As a former helper in Edinburgh, there are a couple of things you need to know if you are interested in taking this on.
You need to be able store several tandems when they are not being used.
The riding skills of who want to borrow a tandem are highly variable, so you may need to try to teach them how to ride a tandem, which is not like riding a solo bike.
If you can help, do get in touch with them.

Help us make cycling more accessible and connect people with the joy of a bicycle. We have a fantastic team of volunteers who support us in many ways, so please do reach out if you'd like to be part of the community.
🛒 Shop volunteers: Helping with customer service and support, with the role focused on offering advice up to your comfort level and building up to assist with sales. In busy times this is invaluable support to try and allow our refurbishment mechanics to continue getting bikes ready for sale; while in quieter times it allows for extra help across the general retail duties of the shop. We are also busy with the Wee Bike Library project which you can get involved with, connecting children with a free bike loan (smiles all round).
Current opportunities, with 3-4 hours weekly shifts:
Tollcross: Friday (between 12:30pm-6:30pm) and Saturday morning (9:30am-1pm) fortnightly.
Gorgie: Saturday 1-4pm.
🛠️ Fix Your Own Bike volunteers: We are seeking experienced mechanics to support our FYOB sessions, where people pay £6/hour to utilise a stand and full toolkit to work on their own bike. We are looking for volunteers to help provide advice to those attending these sessions, to ensure we can continue to offer this valuable resource. Those best fit for the role would have a lot of experience with bike maintenance and also be good at calmly communicating advice to participants. Sessions are on Wednesday (5-8pm) and Saturday (1-4pm) with the later more in need of regular support.

🎭 With works on the refurbishment of the King’s Theatre drawing to a close, but commencement on the build of this ‘missing link’ cycle route not due until next year, there were concerns that potentially Tarvit Street — part of the new route and closed to motor traffic for around four years during works on the theatre — might be reopened to through-traffic and add to an already busy junction and close again shortly afterwards. Instead, a modal filter will be installed at the junction of Tarvit St and Drumdryan St — which will be made one-way — so motor traffic will only be permitted one-way round a loop of Tarvit westbound, Drumdryan north and then east, returning to Brougham St - with two-way cycling allowed on both arms of the loop. — More details [PDF] »
