๐ฐ News this Week
โ ๏ธ Fair warning; this publication is brought to you by one point five lads on a sofa who got started on all of this after finishing up exorcising the first article at 12:45am. Itโs punchier than usual ๐
๐ซ Council Officers race to ruin the Greenbank to Meadows โquietโ route before the TRO Sub-committee get the chance to

In a new and unexpected twist for everyoneโs favourite transport corridor saga, the war on the Greenbank to Meadows quiet route gained a surprising new ally this week in the form of Council Officers themselves.
Rather than find a practical and legal route to fixing a newly-discovered mistake in the wording of the Traffic Regulation Orders that cover two of the key modal filters suppressing through-traffic on the route, Officers โ assuredly in no way unduly influenced by a vocal minority of angry motorists locally and the fact thereโs an election looming โ are instead recommending removing them along with a third supposedly โinterdependentโ filter that keeps walkers, wheelers and cyclists safe on a formerly busy section of Braid Road that had seen local residents calling on the council for speed reduction measures two full years before COVID-era schemes were even a twinkle in a transport convenerโs eye.
I liked the carry-on films more when they were works of fiction. Why not ruin your day and read the entire piece below.
๐ฅ Seriously what is this now๐ Edinburgh Critical Mass are planning a rally outside of the City Chambers (Royal Mile) on the 12th of May, in support of the key cycle infrastructure in the south of the city referred to be made permanent at the Traffic Regulation Orders Sub-committee meeting that day; with the committee meeting starting at 2pm, this looks set for early afternoon.
๐ ฟ๏ธ Voi hire scheme gaining physically marked parking zones

In more positive news - in a move that will address many of the teething issues with the Voi ebike hire scheme in the city in one fell swoop, the Council (or a Voi subcontractor) have begun marking the locations for leaving hire bikes on pavements with painted zones. From footway encroachment to blocked crossings and unnecessarily blocked cycle parking racks, many of the issues that have harmed public amenity stem from invisible โgeofencedโ zones not being 100% of the answer to corralling hire cycles neatly, and this move will benefit users of the scheme and non-users alike. Users in Glasgow have also reported the same markings being implemented there for some parking spots.
Many thanks to those who sent in photos from their local parking zone!

๐ช Road closure info โ many thanks to regular contributor Robbie for collating and preparing these:
๐ณ๏ธ Roseburn to Union Canal: path in Dalry Community Park closed this Polling Day Thursday 7th and Friday 8th May 2026 for Balfour Beatty surface remediation. Itโs not currently clear if any section will remain open. Dalry Rd and Telfer Subway may offer an alternate route. However, be aware of nearby closure of Orwell Terrace which requires a dismount to pass.

๐ง Telfer Subway: Closure of Orwell Terrace for Dalry footway improvement until 2nd June 2026, requiring a dismount to access Telfer Subway.
๐ง Russell Road: Segregated cycleway leading to Roseburn to Union Canal path closed by SGN to investigate a gas leak. At time of writing, the footway remains open requiring dismounting or re-joining the carriageway.
๐๏ธ Dundee St: Segregated cycle lane remains closed westbound at bridge over West Approach Rd due to overrunning building demolition work.
๐ง Rodney Street Tunnel: Offroad path on NCR75 between King George V Park and Warriston Path obstructed by Virgin Media works near Tesco. At time of writing, a gap in works allows access to the tunnel but requires a dismount. Works are expected to conclude today, 4th May 2026.
โช High Street: Closed for Kirking of the Scottish Parliament event Wednesday 13th May from 1pm between South Bridge and George IV Bridge. There will also be no access to the Pedestrian and Cycle Zone on Cockburn St.
๐๏ธ Holyrood Park: Roads Closed including cycles from 3pm Friday 22nd May for EMF event setup works. It will be required to dismount to access the offroad shared use cycle path around Holyrood Park. The High Road loop will also be closed.
Long Term Closures:
๐ Cramond Road South: Section of NCR 1 by Tesco and roundabout by Davidsons Main Park obstructed by resurfacing and footway widening until end May 2026. If youโre travelling to Davidsonโs Mains Park, it may be better to stay on NCR1 to avoid a dismount.
๐ฒ Summerhall: Segregated Cycle Lanes by Melville Dr and Melville Ter obstructed by Summerhall improvement works until late May 2026.
๐ Harrison Road: Bridges closed due to structural concerns with micro-cracking in the original cast iron beams. The north-west bridge over a small path is closed for rebuilding until end August 2026, including the path below. The south-east bridge is closed to cars, but open to pedestrians and cyclists.
๐ฒ Valleyfield Street: Closed for Meadows to Union Canal Improvement works until late May 2026. A cycle diversion is in place on Glengyle Ter.
๐ South Gyle Road: Bridge between modal filter and Quiet Route 9 closed for repairs. It is required to dismount and use a temporary bridge. Works are being followed by resurfacing and new raised tables, estimated completion June 2026.
๐๏ธ St Marks Path: Section of Quietroute 20 between McDonald Road and Warriston Path impacted by CEC Powderhall redevelopment works. The path is expected to remain open during the majority of the construction programme. Until a temporary path is provided, exercise caution at manned crossing gates when passing through the site.
๐๏ธ Silverknowes Road: Road to Silverknowes Beach closed for resurfacing works and reconfiguration of the cycle lane. Works have halted, with cycle access in the meantime currently unclear.
๐ฆ Bankhead Drive: Quietroute 8 along the tramline obstructed at junction with S Gyle Access until Summer 2026 for construction of West Edinburgh Link.
๐๏ธ Edinburgh Park Station: Quiet Route 8 cycle path between Hermiston Gait and the Gyle Centre closed for works in preparation of the Edinburgh Arena development. Itโs only possible to go around by carrying your bike up roughly 20 steps or by following the shared use footway on Lochside Ave.
๐๏ธ Port Hamilton Cyclepath: Shared use path between Union Canal and West End closed until 2026/27 for building works. A diversion is advised via Gardeners Crescent and Semple Street.
๐๏ธ Craighall Road: Closed until May 2028 for the Refurbishment of Trinity Academy. Access to the Victoria Path is expected to be maintained. A diversion will be signed along Newhaven Road, however the removal of parking for improved traffic flow may lead to this being a wider and faster road, less suitable for cycles.
โก Ongoing: The questionable Network Rail ban on ebike parking at Waverley Station - best to make alternative parking plans if travelling from this station at present.

๐ฌ A free talk on 21st May, 7pm with Edinburgh Festival of Cycling from Jack Thurston:
When the first Lost Lanes appeared in 2013, cyclingโs public image was dominated by speed โ the Tour de France, Olympic velodrome glory, and the first stirrings of the sportive boom. Into that context, Jack Thurston offered a calmer and more immersive approach to cycling.
Most cycling guidebooks tell you where to go. Lost Lanes makes you want to go there. Each route is researched and written as an experience to be savoured, drawing on the geology, landscape and the human history of the landscape through which the rider will pass. The result sits in a tradition that stretches back through Edward Thomas and Roger Deakin โ writers who understood that a place reveals itself most fully to those moving through it slowly and mindfully.
Lost Lanes routes are designed to keep riders on quiet lanes and forgotten byways, away from traffic and away from the metrics โ the speeds and distances, the Strava segments, the relentless quantification that dominates so much of modern cycling culture.
Jack will talk about researching and riding the routes for the new Scotland book โ and the particular pleasure of travelling slowly and how the books led to the โSlow Cyclingโ series of feature-length travel documentaries on GCN+ that Jack presented alongside Jenny Graham, Simon Richardson, Ned Boulting, Blake Samson and Alec Briggs.

๐ซ Help Needed
๐ฒ The Bike Station - looking for volunteer support ๐ฒ
With the days getting longer and brighter, thankfully more people are keen to get back on their bike, or on one for the first time. If you would like to support accessible cycling in Edinburgh, we are recruiting new volunteers to support our mission!
๐ฆ๐ฒ Cargo bike rider volunteers: Whether you've ridden a cargo bike for thousands of miles, or are brand new to the great machines - could you help us move goods between our Edinburgh branches via cargo bike and reduce our reliance on our van? Full training is given to successful applicants to ensure you're confident and competent to ride a long wheel base cargo bike in our lovely city. Coordinating with staff on site and via messages, goods are moved between Gorgie and Tollcross to ensure we can operate smoothly. Most suitable applicants are those with plenty of on road riding experience. Current vacancies are 3-4 hours on Thursday and Saturday, so please let us know if this could be for you.
๐ Shop volunteers: Helping with customer service and support, with the role focused on offering advice up to your comfort level and building up to assist with sales. In busy times this is invaluable support to try and allow our refurbishment mechanics to continue getting bikes ready for sale; while in quieter times it allows for extra help across the general retail duties of the shop. We are also busy with the Wee Bike Library project which you can get involved with, connecting children with a free bike loan (smiles all round).
Current opportunities seeking support are 3-4 hour shifts on Saturday afternoon in Gorgie, as well as Thursday afternoon and Saturday morning in Tollcross.
๐ ๏ธ Fix Your Own Bike volunteers: We are exploring the option of expanding the reach of our FYOB sessions, where people pay ยฃ6/hour to utilise a stand and full toolkit to work on their own bike. We are looking for volunteers to help provide advice to those attending these sessions, seeing whether with more energy in the team if expansion is suitable. Those best fit for the role would have a lot of experience with bike maintenance and also be good at calmly communicating advice to participants.
If any of these roles are of interest, please contact [jamie.henderson@thebikestation.org.uk](mailto: jamie.henderson@thebikestation.org.uk) to discuss the role in more detail.
As a volunteer you not only join a community of like-minded individuals passionate about cycling - you can also access bikes, parts and accessories at a discounted price as well as heavily discounted maintenance courses after 6 months of volunteering.
๐ ฟ๏ธ From Gear Up Scotland - cycle racking for sale:
We are a small social enterprise based in Lanark and will shortly vacate our current premises. We have two two tier cycle racks with Sheffield lowers for sale. Open to any reasonable offers - can transport to Edinburgh. Installation would need to be managed by the recipient. Happy to sell the racks separately.
