👥 More about Cycle Buddies🎉 Pedal on Parliament - Call for Marshals

Pedal on Parliament is back on 30th May, 11:30am - and are seeking ride marshals.
Marshals help keep people safe and having fun, and are a big part of making this mass ride to the Scottish Parliament happen. If you’ve helped out with blocking on Critical Mass, Infrasisters, Pedal on Parliament or similar rides in the past, PoP’s co-organisers would love for you to sign up to receive more details over here.
Pedal on Parliament is completely volunteer-driven. We can only show up to Holyrood en-masse to demand safer cycling in Scotland thanks to those who can give their time to make it happen. Join us and play your part.

✊ Beautiful sunshine, beautiful bikes, and beautiful people graced the city streets on Saturday for Edinburgh Critical Mass - lots of great photos and videos shared across Edinburgh’s best cycling networks too:
⚡ Great shot of the electric… hexacycle? in attendance, shared by the good cap’n Badbeard on Bluesky;
📺 Nice wee video cut by Dr Mark Hartl on Bluesky showing off the route and the glorious weather;
☀️ Some cracking shots and a video from Mark Cairney on Bluesky
📷 Superb ‘big camera’ photography from chdot shared on City Cycling Edinburgh
🫶 Our own shots on Bluesky
📅 Also from Critical Mass; a rally is planned outside of the City Chambers on the 12th of May, in support of key cycle infrastructure in the south of the city being made permanent at the TRO Sub-committee meeting that morning; the Braid Rd, Comiston Rd and Greenbank to Meadows Quiet Route schemes will all have objections scrutinised and should be made permanent, in whole or in part, and CM are organising a show of support outside that morning. More details to follow.
⚠️ May 30th’s Edinburgh Critical Mass ride will instead be Pedal on Parliament, at the earlier time of 11:30am!
🅿️ Having heard about cycle parking removals during the Kings Theatre public realm works, we followed up with the project lead who shared that Sheffield racks will indeed be returning in force:
“I can confirm that as part of the ongoing works we will be reintroducing 4No. Sheffield Stands on Valleyfield Street (northside) at Leven Street, and 2No. beside Scotmid COOP on Leven Street. We will also be installing 4No.new Sheffield Stands on Gillespie Crescent (northside) at Gillespie Place. We are aware of the demand for cycle parking on this corridor and we will also be reviewing the final layouts to see if there are any other locations that would lend themselves to having Sheffield Stands introduced.
We appreciate that the cycle parking provision has been reduced during the works and we are aiming to reinstate the provisions at the earliest opportunity. This will likely be in early May alongside other street furniture works.”
👑 Some new rides available with inclusive cycle club Queens of Pain:
“Queens of Pain are on a mission to increase diversity within cycling. We want to get as many cis women, trans folk and enbies on bikes as we can and that starts with making these groups feel comfortable, confident and supported. Our aim is for our rides to be a gateway for people to grow and go off on their own adventures, increasing representation in the outdoors industry.”
QoP have a new start point of Portobello Town Hall, and their next ride from there is 6th May, 7pm - also check out the updates to their website with what to expect;

⚒️ There’s a few great photos of the finished South Queensferry protected cycleway posted by Alan Gordon to Bluesky;
🎙️ The latest episode - number three - of The Workers Observatory election season podcast “Gig Workers’ Guide to the Scottish Election” features Ian Maxwell of Spokes on the theme of ‘Workers consulted on City Infrastructure’. Well worth a listen, which you can do on the webpage or by searching ‘Gig Workers’ Guide to the Scottish Election’ in your podcast app of choice;
🏴 Cycling Scotland are in the last few days of a fundraising drive in which donations are doubled, until 29th April:
From 22-29 April, Cycling Scotland is taking part in The Big Give’s Earth Raise campaign, aimed at providing a funding boost to partners delivering activities to improve lives through increased access to bikes and opportunities to cycle.
Through The Big Give, funding raised towards our campaign target of £12,500 will be matched through selected trusts and foundations, with each individual donation having twice the impact. — donate at BigGive »
🍃 A nice feature for The Cycling Gardeners — the cargo-bike powered gardening firm — in the Edinburgh Inquirer; the Inquirer run some great articles, though reading this one in full will require you to download and use the Substack app… so like me you might just end up smiling and waving at the preview;

🌐 Check out the shiny new website for everyone’s favourite seaside bike library custodians, Porty Community Energy — involved not just in active travel but many other sustainable causes too.
😀 A wee reminder from Bridgend Farmhouse that their social rides are back on:
A New Term Of Guided Community Bike Rides - Weekly rides are underway on Fridays, running 2pm-4pm, until 30th October. The pace is gentle and social on mostly flat, off main road, routes. Destinations vary within an 8-10 mile range – the group has visited the Meadows, Portobello Beach, and more. Hire an e-bike [£5] or borrow a pedal bike for free [Helmets included]. Children welcome with an able adult rider. Book via admin@bridgendfarmhouse.org.uk
📅 The Bike Station are hosting a Dr Bike - free repairs and advice session - on 2nd May, 12pm to 2pm on Middle Meadow Walk.
They also provided a volunteering update below:
🚲 The Bike Station - looking for volunteer support 🚲
With the days getting longer and brighter, thankfully more people are keen to get back on their bike, or on one for the first time. If you would like to support accessible cycling in Edinburgh, we are recruiting new volunteers to support our mission!
📦🚲 Cargo bike rider volunteers: Whether you've ridden a cargo bike for thousands of miles, or are brand new to the great machines - could you help us move goods between our Edinburgh branches via cargo bike and reduce our reliance on our van? Full training is given to successful applicants to ensure you're confident and competent to ride a long wheel base cargo bike in our lovely city. Coordinating with staff on site and via messages, goods are moved between Gorgie and Tollcross to ensure we can operate smoothly. Most suitable applicants are those with plenty of on road riding experience. Current vacancies are 3-4 hours on Thursday and Saturday, so please let us know if this could be for you.
🛒 Shop volunteers: Helping with customer service and support, with the role focused on offering advice up to your comfort level and building up to assist with sales. In busy times this is invaluable support to try and allow our refurbishment mechanics to continue getting bikes ready for sale; while in quieter times it allows for extra help across the general retail duties of the shop. We are also busy with the Wee Bike Library project which you can get involved with, connecting children with a free bike loan (smiles all round).
Current opportunities seeking support are 3-4 hour shifts on Saturday afternoon in Gorgie, as well as Thursday afternoon and Saturday morning in Tollcross.
🛠️ Fix Your Own Bike volunteers: We are exploring the option of expanding the reach of our FYOB sessions, where people pay £6/hour to utilise a stand and full toolkit to work on their own bike. We are looking for volunteers to help provide advice to those attending these sessions, seeing whether with more energy in the team if expansion is suitable. Those best fit for the role would have a lot of experience with bike maintenance and also be good at calmly communicating advice to participants.
If any of these roles are of interest, please contact jamie.henderson@thebikestation.org.uk to discuss the role in more detail.
As a volunteer you not only join a community of like-minded individuals passionate about cycling - you can also access bikes, parts and accessories at a discounted price as well as heavily discounted maintenance courses after 6 months of volunteering.
🍕 Cycle repair chain Fettle are hosting ‘Slice and Service’ at their Fountainpark workshop:
Hey everyone! We’re hosting a FREE bike maintenance workshop at Fettle in Fountain Park and you’re invited 🙌

📪 Road closure info — many thanks to regular contributor Robbie for collating and preparing these:
🚧 Russell Road: Segregated cycleway on Roseburn to Union Canal path closed by SGN to investigate a gas leak. At time of writing, the footway has re-opened. Be aware of the changing state of these works, which may require re-joining the carriageway or dismounting.
🏗️ Gifford Park: Closure of NCN1 between Innocent Railway and The Meadows for a telecoms crane lift this Thursday 30th April. It’s expected that a dismount will be required to pass the works.
Long Term Closures:
🛒 Cramond Road South: Section of NCR 1 by Tesco and roundabout by Davidsons Main Park obstructed by resurfacing and footway widening until end May 2026. If you’re travelling to Davidson’s Mains Park, it may be better to stay on NCR1 to avoid a dismount.
🚧 Telfer Subway: Closure of Orwell Terrace for Dalry footway improvement currently expected to begin 4th May for 8 weeks, which may require a dismount to access Telfer Subway.
🚲 Summerhall: Segregated Cycle Lanes by Melville Dr and Melville Ter obstructed by Summerhall improvement works until May 2026.
🌉 Harrison Road: Bridges closed due to structural concerns with micro-cracking in the original cast iron beams. The north-west bridge over a small path is closed for rebuilding until end August 2026, including the path below. The south-east bridge is closed to cars, but open to pedestrians and cyclists.
🚲 Valleyfield Street: Closed for Meadows to Union Canal Improvement works until mid-May 2026. A cycle diversion is in place on Glengyle Ter.
🌉 South Gyle Road: Bridge between modal filter and Quiet Route 9 closed for repairs. It is required to dismount and use a temporary bridge. Works are being followed by resurfacing and new raised tables, estimated completion June 2026.
🏗️ St Marks Path: Section of Quietroute 20 between McDonald Road and Warriston Path impacted by CEC Powderhall redevelopment works. The path is expected to remain open during the majority of the construction programme. Until a temporary path is provided, exercise caution at manned crossing gates when passing through the site.
🏖️ Silverknowes Road: Road to Silverknowes Beach closed for resurfacing works and reconfiguration of the cycle lane. Works have halted, with cycle access in the meantime currently unclear.
🚦 Bankhead Drive: Quietroute 8 along the tramline obstructed at junction with S Gyle Access until Summer 2026 for construction of West Edinburgh Link.
🏗️ Edinburgh Park Station: Quiet Route 8 cycle path between Hermiston Gait and the Gyle Centre closed for works in preparation of the Edinburgh Arena development. It’s only possible to go around by carrying your bike up roughly 20 steps or by following the shared use footway on Lochside Ave.
🏗️ Port Hamilton Cyclepath: Shared use path between Union Canal and West End closed until 2026/27 for building works. A diversion is advised via Gardeners Crescent and Semple Street.
🏗️ Craighall Road: Closed until May 2028 for the Refurbishment of Trinity Academy. Access to the Victoria Path is expected to be maintained. A diversion will be signed along Newhaven Road, however the removal of parking for improved traffic flow may lead to this being a wider and faster road, less suitable for cycles.
⚡ Ongoing: The questionable Network Rail ban on ebike parking at Waverley Station - best to make alternative parking plans if travelling from this station at present.

💬 A free talk on 21st May, 7pm with Edinburgh Festival of Cycling from Jack Thurston:
When the first Lost Lanes appeared in 2013, cycling’s public image was dominated by speed — the Tour de France, Olympic velodrome glory, and the first stirrings of the sportive boom. Into that context, Jack Thurston offered a calmer and more immersive approach to cycling.
Most cycling guidebooks tell you where to go. Lost Lanes makes you want to go there. Each route is researched and written as an experience to be savoured, drawing on the geology, landscape and the human history of the landscape through which the rider will pass. The result sits in a tradition that stretches back through Edward Thomas and Roger Deakin — writers who understood that a place reveals itself most fully to those moving through it slowly and mindfully.
Lost Lanes routes are designed to keep riders on quiet lanes and forgotten byways, away from traffic and away from the metrics — the speeds and distances, the Strava segments, the relentless quantification that dominates so much of modern cycling culture.
Jack will talk about researching and riding the routes for the new Scotland book — and the particular pleasure of travelling slowly and how the books led to the “Slow Cycling” series of feature-length travel documentaries on GCN+ that Jack presented alongside Jenny Graham, Simon Richardson, Ned Boulting, Blake Samson and Alec Briggs.
