A drawer inside the cathedral. Fragments drift through. You may linger, but some things will not be explained.

Latent Mournings — book presentation at San Serriffe, September 5 @ 6 PM

For the past year you have been receiving fragments of my research and current work. Today, I'm happy to invite you to the presentation of my book Latent Mournings: Notes on Algorithmic Haunting at San Serriffe in Amsterdam on Saturday, September 5 at 6 pm.

The evening continues a conversation that began at the Sonic Acts Biennial earlier this year, where Hugo Esquinca and I found ourselves working through shared questions around latency, sound, and what persists beneath the surface of computational systems.

For this presentation, I will read new, unpublished fragments from my current research on The Conductive Desert, extending some of the questions developed in Latent Mournings. Hugo will then read from his own ongoing work, and we will close with a conversation between us, open to the room.

Hugo Esquinca is a Mexican sound artist and researcher whose practice engages audio electronics, amplification, and the material and political conditions of sound. He is currently a PhD researcher at the Erasmus Institute for Philosophy and Technology in Rotterdam, under the supervision of Yuk Hui. His work has been presented at venues including the Stedelijk Museum, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, and Berghain, among many others.

This invitation is reaching you somewhat later than I would have liked after a difficult and unexpectedly complicated summer at home, but I very much hope some of you will still be able to join us.

In this issue I preview Affective Asymptote II – Littoral Longings: a traceroute-driven sonification of the Buenos Aires littoral, where colonial conductivity and contemporary fiber overlay the returns of the disappeared.
