Yawny Monsters and Super Sleeps
On a day like May 24, there’s more than one way to smell the roses. Thanks for flying Potpourri.
Dudes of Yore
The benefit of time and social change has made it easier to go back to “dudes rock” media of the past and appreciate the simultaneous coolness and goofiness of it all. Films by Chang Cheh (The One-Armed Swordsman) and Sergio Leone (A Fistful of Dollars) address masculine violence in fairly novel ways.
The Immortal* Hydrangea
They’re a little frayed around the edges, but the hydrangeas I picked up at the beginning of May are still going strong. I am flying mostly on first-hand experience where flowers are concerned, so any long-term success like this is a joy and a surprise. For those keeping score, hydrangeas and alstroemerias have fared the best on my kitchen table in Seattle.
*In a broader sense, any species still alive today can be said to be immortal—until proven otherwise.
The Chairman’s Remarks
Early Eastwood westerns inspired me to actually read the transcript of his wacky chair speech from 2012. Still not really sure what he hoped to accomplish there. Maybe he was improvising? I want to watch the video—a bizarre cultural artifact from a lost political moment—but my sense of second-hand embarrassment is a brightly burning flame, and I don’t want to get too close without precautions.
Scented Candles
I tend to overlook my olfactory environment beyond keeping it relatively neutral, but whenever I pick up a nice scented candle I’m reminded that life can smell good if you want it to.
“Big things is in the plans.”
So says Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def), albeit in the context of his appreciation of the callipygian. I have some pretty big life plans cooking. I am hesitant to divulge details just yet because things are still in the planning phase, but they are fast becoming real and I’m excited to share more.
