Films about African Americans
Debuting on Hulu in November is “The League," focusing on the history of baseball’s Negro Leagues. There's also “Black Ice," about discrimination in professional hockey.
Over on Netflix, there’s “Rustin,” a biopic about Bayard Rustin, a gay African American man who played a role in the civil rights and gay rights movements.
Arriving on Max in November is a film about the life of musician Little Richard.
On a lighter note, a Disney Channel/Disney+ film, “The Naughty Nine,” features Donald Glover playing Santa Claus, dealing with a group of kids he put on the naughty list. I assume the “usual suspects” will be livid about a Black Santa Claus. If curious, here’s the film’s trailer.
Anime continues its Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade presence
November sees TV fully launch into its holiday programming push. This, of course, includes the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. This year’s Macy’s parade will see the debut of balloons of something called “Cool Cats,” based on a line of NFTs (supposedly the “first NFT based balloons”… and hopefully the last), a new Snoopy balloon (as a “Beagle Scout”), and, in a surprise, Monkey D. Luffy, the star of the long-running anime/manga series “One Piece.”
As The Mary Sue notes, this might be a sign that “One Piece” has finally reached mainstream prominence; the Netflix live-action series has become successful enough to be mentioned on “The View.” For the record, there’s also been a Goku balloon (from “Dragon Ball”) in the parade for awhile; Pikachu (“Pokemon”) has also been a parade mainstay since the early 2000s. Still, given the stereotypical Macy’s parade viewer likely isn’t a huge anime/manga fan, “One Piece” appearing stands out.
Sports stuff
As usual, Thanksgiving features three football games throughout the day. Black Friday is also, for the first time, featuring a football game, streamed on Prime Video (presumably as part of their usual “Thursday Night Football” package). Said football game, of course, is competing with various hockey games airing during the day that Friday.
