My thoughts
Netflix is airing “Hannah Gadsby’s Gender Agenda,” a comedy special featuring genderqueer standup comedians from around the world. Whether or not this makes up for Netflix making David Chappelle a heavily-promoted mainstay is up to subscribers. If it helps, Netflix also sees the debut in March of “Shirley,” a movie based on the life of Shirley Chisholm, the first Black congresswoman.
On Disney+, the long-awaited 90s “X-Men” revival, “X-Men ‘97,” makes its debut. The trailer’s available on YouTube; seeing Cyclops saying that line toward the end still feels odd.
President Biden delivers the annual State of the Union address this month, for those interested. It likely won’t have much impact on the election, outside of what few swing voters there are.
Peacock, for some reason, is debuting a made-for-streaming sequel (and TV series) based on the 2010 DreamWorks film “Megamind.” Memes aside, has “Megamind” been that popular a film over the past 14 years to merit a revival?
Sports stuff
March brings “March Madness,” aka the NCAA college basketball playoffs. As usual, the men’s tournament will be on CBS and the Turner-owned sports networks (TNT, TBS, and TruTV). The women’s tournament will be on ESPN.
An NHL hockey game between the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins will get streamed live on Disney+, featuring characters from the animated series “Big City Greens” covering the action. This is similar to Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob-themed Super Bowl coverage in February. However, I wonder how Disney plans to cover any fighting between players.
