Observations
“Inside Out 2,” yet another sequel to a Disney/Pixar film, hits theaters this month. Given the mixed reception to Disney and Pixar’s recent originals, expect more sequels to classic films (i.e., safe bets) in the near future.
June brings the annual Tony Awards, which will be available on CBS and the ad-free version of Paramount+ (aka “Paramount+ with Showtime”).
“Black Barbie” is a documentary about the creation of (and creators of) the first African American Barbie doll, which has stayed a toy staple. I’ve bought Black Barbies for my nieces for Christmas.
“Strawberry Shortcake’s Summer Vacation” is a CGI animated special, set in the same world of the recent 2D-animated “Berry in the Big City” series.
Since it’s Pride Month, we’ll also be getting various LGBTQ-centric movies, TV shows, and specials across the major streaming services. This includes Hulu live streaming Los Angeles’ Pride parade.
Sports stuff
June brings the championship finals for both the NHL and NBA. If it happens (as of this writing), I can’t imagine Disney’s exactly rooting for a Florida Panthers/Edmonton Oilers Stanley Cup ratings-wise (a Canadian team vs. a smaller TV market team?). Then again, Disney has the rights to the NBA and NHL finals, so it’s not like they have much to worry about.
