Rest isn't working anymore. Here's why.

Burnout in the AI era is a decision problem — 3 failures, 2 protocols, 1 strategy. Under 4 minutes.

You took the weekend off and came back exhausted anyway. That's not a rest problem. That's Decision Debt — and AI just raised everyone's interest rate.

3 Failures

1. Treating burnout as a workload problem. Your hours didn't change much. Your decisions per hour did. Which tool, do I trust the output, do I redo it, should I be upskilling instead of resting — every unresolved question is debt accruing interest. Cutting tasks without closing loops changes nothing.

2. Optimizing your downtime. The perfect routine, the biohacked recovery stack, the curated weekend — optimization is deciding, which means your "rest" is just unpaid decision work in athleisure. Optimized downtime is burnout wearing a productivity costume.

3. Defending boundaries with feelings instead of data. "I'm at capacity" loses every negotiation. A capacity audit — a week of tracking where your judgment calls actually land — wins them. Boundaries backed by data survive pressure. Boundaries backed by vibes get rescheduled.

2 Protocols

1. The personal Decision Rights Charter. Sort your work once into three tiers: Delegate (AI owns it — drafts, summaries, triage), Augment (AI assists, you decide), Reserve (yours alone, never relitigated). One sorting session deletes hundreds of micro-decisions a week. That's debt paydown, not debt management.

2. Default decisions for downtime. Pre-decide your evenings, your training, your empty block — so rest contains zero open loops. When the plan breaks, run a short reset and return to baseline instead of renegotiating the whole system at 8 p.m. Rest restores you exactly to the degree that it's decision-free.

1 Strategy

Stop asking what AI can do. Decide what stays yours. AI is an amplifier: sound decision architecture and it pays your debt down; chaos and it compounds it. The professionals who come through this era intact will be the ones who decided — deliberately and early — which decisions were still theirs.

One question before you go: How many decisions are you carrying home tonight that were already yours to close?
