The OctoPost: Cretaceous Kraken & Sneak Peek

I’m crunching on a deadline, so this month’s newsletter is abbreviated. However, I am very excited about the Funny Pages.

Cephalopod News

Have you heard of the giant Cretaceous octopuses? Scientists used an amazing technique called digital fossil mining to discover MASSIVE fossil cephalopod beaks. I have a lot of excitement about their findings and a lot of questions about their interpretations. More details in my bluesky thread.

Check out this incredible reconstruction by paleoartist Joschua Knüppe!

Beautiful digital art of an enormous octopus--maybe 6-7 meters--grabbing an also-enormous ammonite in the dark depths of the sea. They are illuminated by the dive light of an anachronistic human diver, who provides a scale object significantly smaller than both cephalopods.

My News

I had a great time presenting this online talk with Smithsonian Associates last month:

The opening slide of a talk titled "Don't Be a Sucker: Sorting Fact from Fiction in Popular Cephalopod Portrayals" by Danna Staaf, Ph.D., for Smithsonian Associates, April 20. 2026. There are pictures of Squidward from Spongebob Squarepants and Doc Ock from Spider-Man.

I’d love to give it again, so hit me up if you know a venue that might be interested.

Funny Pages

I’m nearly done with the art for my next book, Tentacle Mysteries: Awesome Octopuses, Spectacular Squid, and the Scientists Who Dug Up Their Secrets. This is my very first “written and illustrated by” project, which is a THRILL. I don’t think I’m allowed to post any final pieces yet (I’ll check on that and start sharing as soon as I can) but I thought y’all might enjoy this early draft of an illustration.

Cartoon drawing of a food web with an orange squid at the center. Arrayed above it are four hungry predators (dolphin, gull, tuna, shark) and below it are several terrified prey items (two different kinds of fish, a small squid, and a pair of shrimp holding each other for dear life).
