Postkort fra 2043: The Wrong Kind of Sound

Poul,
A boy from the new electric tug fleet brought a smart mooring cleat to the commons today. Sensors, micro-hydraulics, tension feedback to the harbour master — very clever. Ultrasonically welded casing. No bolts. I tapped it with a hammer and it made the wrong kind of sound. The wrong kind of sound, Poul. The kind that says: we do not want you inside.
I gave him an old cast-iron cleat from the Holmen ferry, 1978, four bolt holes, no secrets. It weighs four kilos and will outlast the boy's pension. He looked at me like I had handed him a horse in the age of the motorcar.
I sat on the pontoon afterwards with a Tuborg. The autonomous ferries went past humming their electric hymn. No vibration. No smell. I miss the smell. Do you remember the smell of the old Rødby engine room? Diesel and hot iron and that particular green paint they used on the bulkheads. You could read the whole ship's mood from the air.
Harbour's gone quiet in the evenings now. Good quiet, mostly. But sometimes I miss the conversation.
L.
P.S. Fog coming in from Køge Bay. You can hear the foghorn from Stevns in the right wind. Real sound. No algorithm.
