Listen to my new game's music!
I finally made some music!?
The good thing about writing a weekly newsletter is that I can look back and see what I was thinking last week. Here's what I said about my new game's music at the time:
"my current plan for music is to take the setup I was using for Chessplosion's music and to try to push it in a bit of a jazzier direction, by adding one or two extra instruments and possibly finding some more live-sounding drums to work with."
This is still my plan! But after coming up with a rough idea of what I wanted each of the game's individual tracks to sound like, I decided I wanted the underground cave area of the game to have more of a chilled out Chessplosion-like vibe with the exact same set of instruments (electric piano, upright bass, drums). So even though it isn't representative of the rest of the soundtrack and it's not upbeat enough to use in a trailer, I chose to make this track first. It's been over a year since I've made any music, and I felt like the easiest way to ease myself back into the composition process is to make the type of music I already know how to make.
Here's what I have so far, with some gameplay footage of one of the cave stages. I'm sure I'll make plenty of tweaks to the final mix and the composition, but I'm happy with this rough version!
Just to reiterate, this isn't representative of what the rest of the soundtrack will sound like. But it still feels great to finally be able to play part of the game with real background music, and I hope you like it too! Experiencing the game with music makes me really want to get in there and add some sound effects, but that can wait until I've made the rest of the music and announced the game.
Chessplosion is 50% off until Sunday!
Just as a reminder, there are 3 days left to save 50% on Chessplosion on Steam and itch.io as part of the Friendship Games Week 2023 Steam event. Thank you so much to everyone who has bought the game so far or recommended it to a friend!
Anyway, that's my week! My plan is to keep making more music, but it's looking like next week is going be the busiest and most stressful week of my transition so far. So I'll do my best to get some work done but I'll try not to push myself too hard. I hope you all have a great weekend and I'll see you next week!
