Hammer duck animation progress, and arcade games!
I've been animating my new game's main character
This afternoon, I finally finished getting all of the main character's animations into my new game. It feels great to finally be able to control them, running around and hitting things with a big hammer. But my favorite animation is the one that plays when they lose all their health:
It's a silly animation that I threw together in a couple of minutes, but it makes me laugh and that's what's important. I love drawing quick messy smear frames:
But now that my new animations are in the game and hooked up to the gameplay, there are all sorts of changes I want to make to them. The attack animations don't have quite as much weight and impact as they could, and I'd like to change how the game decides exactly which attack animation to play, and I want to change the shading on the hammer to make it feel shiny and metallic, and so on.
I'd like to make the duck look a bit more interesting too, probably by giving them a hat. Putting a hat on a duck solves everything. So anyway, I'm not quite ready to show the new attack animations here, but hopefully you'll get to see a better version of them soon!
I keep playing arcade-style videogames
I've been playing way too many arcade games these last couple of weeks. I finished Sisters Royale and I've been playing lots of other arcade-style shmups, and lots of platformer/beat em up hybrid games like Astro Boy: Omega Factor, Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Bad Dream, Dragon Ball: Advanced Adventure, and Ragnarok Battle Offline. They're all fantastic games!
I finally got around to playing Sin & Punishment: Star Successor (Wii) for the first time too. I can't believe how smoothly it transitions gameplay styles between a rail shooter, a horizontal shooter, a vertical shooter, a top-down arena shooter, and more. If you somehow missed out on this one the first time round, I highly recommend it!
So if you're curious about what types of games I'll be making in the future, the answer is that I'll probably make a shmup and a beat em up at some point! They're all so fun! Or maybe I'll get obsessed with something else before I finish making my current game. Who knows...
Anyway, that's all I've been up to. Let me know what you think of my silly duck animation and how you feel about arcade game genres like beat em ups and shmups, and I'll see you next time!
