Fire, ice, drum and bass
Hello! I’ve been spending these last two weeks chipping away at my game’s environment art and music. I’ve pretty much just been working on art and audio with almost no programming or game design, so I hope you like pictures!
Fire and ice
The first environment I drew was based on the Ash Volcano color scheme from my game Ducky’s Delivery Service:
It took a while to get the animated lava surface and the lava splash animation working, but everything else went smoothly!
For the next environment, I realized that the chunky angular walls and the pools of liquid would be perfect for an ice environment too! All it needed was a new color scheme:
It looked even better than I thought it would! I gave it a try in the penguin level and I think it turned out great. You can see it in action here:
Unfortunately the ice penguin minions in the boss fight were almost invisible, so I had to tweak their color scheme to give them some more contrast. Let that be a lesson: if your game is going to have blue projectiles on top of a blue background, you should probably make sure they’ll be visible instead of only testing them on a green background.
With that fixed, the ice stage was complete!
Drum and bass
You might have noticed some new music in the above video. I decided to make a jazzy drum and bass track in a similar style to Chessplosion, except with the 90s arcade MIDI instrument samples that I’m using for this game! It worked much better than I thought it would.
I finished another track too, but the main thing I’ve been doing for these past two weeks is coming up with a whole bunch of rough musical ideas, recording them, and doing nothing with them. Next week I’ll dig through the vault and turn some of these ideas into finished tracks…
Anything else?
I’ve been going wild with the Ghosts ‘n Goblins series, playing the first game in the series and the more recent Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection. I haven’t come close to finishing either of them yet but I’m having a great time, and I absolutely need to make a game like them someday.
In other news, this Pokémon comic by nematode made me laugh. Maybe you'll like it too.
That’s all I’ve been up to recently. I’m going to jump back into making music and environment art, and maybe I’ll even draw some brand new environments that aren’t just a palette swap of the volcano. In the meantime, I hope you all have a great couple of weeks!
