Cool things I've seen this week. Also, Chessplosion is 50% off in the Steam Sale!
Hi everyone! I'm still on vacation, catching up on rest. Turns out that resting is important, and I really needed this time off. Although I've spent most of this week doing things that aren't very interesting to talk about in a newsletter, such as buying food at farmers markets and filling in lots of tedious forms to get my name updated on various documents, there's still a bit of news:
Chessplosion is 50% off on Steam and itch!
The Steam and itch winter sales are both live! If you don't own Chessplosion yet or if you know someone who would enjoy receiving it as a gift, you can save 50% on Chessplosion on Steam and itch.
Cool things I've seen while on vacation this week
- I loved this video by Hilltop about the effort that goes into fan-translating a videogame. My games contain a huge amount of font data (there are thousands of characters in Chinese/Japanese/Korean fonts) and it was inspiring to see the ways that some older games compressed that data down. I just implemented a similar method into my new game!
- Sylvie Lime is an interesting freeware platformer with lots of unique items and movement options. I'm still not very far through the game, but I'm going to keep playing it right after I finish writing this newsletter. The theme tune is so powerful...
- cleanEdge is a new open source algorithm/shader for rotating pixel art sprites. It looks so good! The only rotating pixel art sprites in my new game are the windmill blades (sorry for the old footage) and they're already pretty chunky, but I'll definitely give this algorithm a try if I want to start rotating more sprites.
- I replayed Snowboard Kids for the N64 for the first time in decades, and I played Snowboard Kids 2 for the first time ever. I had forgotten just how much cute pixel art was in the menus!
That's all for me. Enjoy the holidays, see you next week!
