It's July, I went on vacation at the end of June and I leave (as of this newsletter) tomorrow for the East coast. I have however decided to take a leap and will be moving back to the Phoenix, Arizona area at the end of 2021. It may be hot out here, but there's no snow!
A few things to get to, so let's get into it!
It's better late than never, so I am sending this out (hopefully typo-free) a few days late. Here's some updates from the last newsletter:
🔊 Twitch. I am going to be streaming again, probably starting in late-July (after some time back from my trip). It will be an afternoon stream, I had an informal Twitter poll but I will have to push the stream until after my W3C meeting. So a Friday, but I have to look at times because I have had a few W3C meetings moved around, so stay tuned for that.
📝 One article is on CSS-Tricks. The other article is awaiting publication on Smashing Magazine! Fnal edits were made last week!
🗣 I have some upcoming appearances coming in the next few months. Stay tuned for those announcements as well.
I have released podcast episode six with Mike Monteiro, designer, speaker, author, and one half of Mule Design. It was a great chat about design, his books that I recommend a lot, and how we're ruining design and if it can be saved. It's a NSFW conversation and though not that bad, it's a frank conversation about the tech landscape.
You can watch the epsiode here: 📺 https://youtu.be/iYAgOkHQg-Y
or you can listen to the audio version on your podcast platform of choice.
Episode seven is being worked on as far as editing and making sure captions are good for the video version and getting ready for audio release with Preston So, author of Voice Content and Usability which is yet another book from A Book Apart that I highly recommend!
Spicy Link of the Month 🌶
WebAIM Screen Reader Survey No. 9
"In May to June 2021, WebAIM surveyed preferences of screen reader users and received 1568 responses."
A very important survey to look over to understand screen reader user needs to make the screen reader experience inclusive and accessible for all.
A11y Tip of the Month ♿️
Color Contrast: I came across some more color contrast issues along my journeys over the past month which is reinforcing the urgency to remind designers and developers about color contrast. I also saw a few tweets regarding some contrast issues, one being of white text on a yellow background which we all know is a nightmare. While guidelines have ratios set at 4.5 to 1, I encourage folks to aim higher.
Recipe of the Month 🦞
Maine Lobster Au Gratin (6 servings)
Ingredients
Directions
Preheat oven to 350°. Butter a 6 cup casserole dish. In a sauce pan melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook stirring constantly for 2 to 3 minutes. Be careful not to brown the flour.
Remove from the heat and slowly whisk in the cream and milk. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, celery, onion and pimento. Add ½ cup of the cheese and the Maine Lobster meat, mix well.
Pour the mixture into the prepared casserole dish and top with the remaining ¼ cup cheese. Bake until the cheese is lightly browned, about 20 minutes.
Still want to see recipes? Let me know!
I am still looking for a sponsor or sponsors for the podcast to help defray expenses for transcript/captioning software (Descript) and getting a new domain and website up! Please send anyone or company my way, or if you run a company, contact me!
This newsletter gets sent out on the first of every month. Tell your friends and tell your followers!
Until then, you can find the links below where you can find me and ask any questions you may have.
That's it for this month! Keep on being amazing and building great things!
Keep on, keepin’ on!!
