A wavy variable color font:

If you’re looking for fun summer vibes, look no further than Velzyland. The good folks at Adidas Skateboarding chose Velzyland for the titles of their skate video PARAÍSO, which features Felipe Gustavo, Vincent Milou and Miles Silva. It’s a beautifully shot video that reminds me of countless summer days skating with friends from first light until late into the night.

The undulating letterforms of Velzyland have been making a splash in the ocean as well. This incredible series of surf videos from Reed Platenius expertly uses Velzyland for its video titles. The use of large, eye-catching typography harmonizes nicely with the awe-inspiring surfing on gorgeous waves in beautiful, remote locations.

I named Velzyland after my favorite place to surf on the North Shore of Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi, (just down the road from where I was born) so it’s wonderful to see fellow surfers put the typeface to such good use. Try Velzyland at CJType.com

Pennypacker Type Specimen Poster
If you are attending Typographics, you will get a Pennypacker poster in your goody bag. They are also for sale in Honolulu at Mori Hawaii which is located inside the Capitol Modern museum.

The type specimen poster was designed by Sabrina Öttl, and it “showcases imaginative, real-world applications on the front, while the reverse features an intimate conversation between the designer and creator, offering insights into the typeface’s conceptual and technical development.”
Lastly, I would like share some wonderful usage of ʻŌpua Mauka from the ʻŌpua Typeface Collection, and the details about its newest styles.
ʻŌpua Mauka at Bishop Museum
The exhibition Kū a Lanakila! Expressions of Sovereignty in early Territorial Hawaiʻi uses ʻŌpua Mauka Bold for the exhibition wall text. The typeface was designed first for ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language), intentionally prioritizing the design of the ʻokina, kahakō and common letter combinations in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi even before the full English alphabet was drawn. So it particularly shines when used to typeset Hawaiian words and phrases. The exhibition typography similarly prioritizes the Hawaiian text, large, bold and foregrounded on top, with English as the secondary read, which is especially important for an exhibition about expressions of Hawaiian sovereignty. I am honored for ʻŌpua Mauka to be chosen for such an powerful exhibition at the prestigious Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum, the world's largest collection of Hawaiian and Pacific cultural artifacts.

ʻŌpua Mauka for Lōʻihi Records
More wonderful usage of ʻŌpua Mauka has been coming from the avant-garde classical label Lōʻihi records, including for the powerful debut release Standing Above The Clouds by Juliard-trained TJ Keanu Tario, and the lush minimalist landscapes of Hoʻololi by Floteson, a project by label founder Dean Harada.

ʻŌpua Mauka new styles
Since the initial release in the Spring of 2024, ʻŌpua Mauka has grown to include additional weights; the Regular and Semibold weights bridge to range between the initially released Light and Bold styles. And coming soon, the new Thin and Extra Light styles expand the family into the lighter weight range, for a total of 6 weights.
