Sightlines and light-maps: exhibition and live sets this weekend
A one-off edition of Cath's newsletter, for the 'Sightlines and light-maps' exhibition this weekend...
Hello all,
My regular newsletter will be returning soon in a new form, but I wanted to drop you a special email in the mean time to flag up an event I’m organising this weekend…
First, some background. Over the past year I’ve been getting deeper into DIY publishing, and the result of that has been the four-zine series Setlist. Every three months or so since last summer I’ve published a riso-printed A7 zine featuring tiny pieces of work by some of my favourite artists from, or from around, the improvised and experimental music scene. The first zine called for four-word texts, the second for images, the third for a question, and the fourth for tiny maps. The resulting miniature anthologies are intended as pocket-sized tools for improvised performance; starting points for a set, ideas for a title, provocations for a new collaboration... I’ve had a great time compiling them and have been super inspired by people’s responses to the brief each time. You can find the zines in my Ink-Paper-Sound webshop.
Earlier in the year we launched Setlist 3 with a night of live music at Cafe Oto, and now Setlist 4 is getting the launch treatment…in the form of a mini-exhibition!
Befor the summer I was approached by Livia Garcia, one of the Setlist 4 contributors, who offered up her micro artspace Project DIVFUSE in East London as the venue for a launch event. Fast forward to this week and we’re putting on Sightlines and light-maps over three days.
Starting on Friday at 5pm, the graphic artwork from Setlists 2 and 4 will be projected on the wall of the space. Then, across the weekend, we’ll have live improvised sets responding to zine artwork from a brilliant lineup of my fellow improvisers. The schedule is as follows:
Friday 6th September
7pm: Benedict Taylor (viola) and Cath Roberts (baritone saxophone)
Saturday 7th September
4.30pm: Barbie Mukoda (solo flutes)
6pm: Caroline Kraabel (alto saxophone) and John Edwards (double bass)
Sunday 8th September
4.30pm: Sue Lynch (solo saxophone)
6pm: Kate Carr (electronics) and Cath Roberts (electronics)
To come and listen, email divfuse@gmail.com for tickets. There are only 8 places available per set as the space is tiny! Tickets are £7 each, or £12 to come to two sets. Outside of the performance times it’s free to come and see the exhibition, so just drop in. Project DIVFUSE is easy to get to from Dalston Junction and other stations; you can find all the practical info on their site along with a full write-up of the exhibition and the artists involved.
Thanks for reading, and subscribing. The newsletter proper will be back up and running before the year is out! As always, you can check in on my website to see what I’m up to.
All the best,
Cath
