Down at Toddler’s Cove — a festival within the festival
CANTERBURY CITY SHOW UPDATES · 1 JUNE 2026
25–26 July 2026 Westgate Gardens / Westgate Square / Toddler’s Cove / The Guildhall Free entry. Two days. Four zones. One brilliant weekend.
Four zones across the city. But if you wandered into Toddler’s Cove without seeing the map, you’d think you’d stumbled into its own festival entirely!
Toddler’s Cove — the festival within the festival
The GABz KANTAB Afro-Caribbean Family Fest fresh from their Dane John Gardens event on the 20th June will be joining us to anchor the zone, bringing two days of music, food, and community celebration. Expect steel pans, jerk chicken, and an atmosphere that’ll feel a long way from a Canterbury Saturday. The Hip Hop Academy runs alongside it — workshops, performances, and the kind of energy that gets kids moving before they’ve decided if they’re dancers or not.
For the adults, The Stroppy Mare horsebox bar is back, pouring local drinks with its usual no-nonsense charm. It’s become something of an institution.
The Blue Light Zone brings Kent Fire & Rescue and Kent Police into the mix — not in a dry, stand-and-watch way, but with hands-on demonstrations, vehicles to explore, and the kind of access that makes a four-year-old’s year. Fire engines up close. Real kit, real people. If you’ve got children under ten, budget at least an hour here.
Taken together, it’s a zone that works because it doesn’t try to be one thing. Music, movement, emergency services, food, drink, and a strong dose of community pride. All in the shade of the trees by the river.
The partners making it work
Four organisations backing the show — starting with one that’s woven right into Toddler’s Cove itself.
TinyTalk Kent Downs co-presents the Family Zone, and it’s a natural fit. TinyTalk teaches baby signing — real British Sign Language for pre-verbal children — through song, play, and classes across Kent. If you’ve ever watched a nine-month-old tell you they’re hungry before they can speak, you’ll understand why this matters. They’ll be running sessions at the show. Bring your babies!
Whitefriars is Canterbury’s shopping quarter — 50-plus stores on the edge of the city centre. If you’re coming to the show from out of town, you’ll walk through Whitefriars to get there. They know the city, they know the footfall, and they know why an event like this matters to Canterbury’s summer.
Westgate One is brand-new student accommodation in the heart of Canterbury — quiet, secure, and walking distance from everything. Students are a big part of the City Show’s audience, and having Westgate One on board helps us reach that community. They’re backing the show because a city worth studying in is a city worth celebrating in.
Lifestyle Fitness Canterbury keeps the city moving from their gym on Sturry Road. They’re backing the Sports Zone at Westgate Square — a natural extension of what they do every day. If the show inspires you to get active, they’ll be there to help you act on it.
Did you know?
The Afro-Caribbean Family Fest at Toddler’s Cove is driven by GABz KANTAB, a Canterbury-based community group that’s been building bridges between cultures for years. They run events, workshops, and gatherings across Kent. It’s volunteer-run, community-funded, and powered by people who believe the best way to bring a city together is to feed it, play it music, and let the kids run the show.
What’s new since last time
A handful of new stallholders have joined the line-up, and we’ve confirmed the University of Kent as a Gold sponsor — deepening a partnership that’s been building since the show was first sketched out. More on that next time. For now, the programme’s holding steady and the gaps are filling in.
There’s still room for more
We’re still looking for two or three more sponsors to join the nineteen organisations already backing the show. If your business wants to be part of Canterbury’s biggest free community weekend — in front of thousands of families across two days — reply to this email. Packages from £500.
With thanks to every organisation backing the show
