Happy new year.
"I devoutly believe in the reign of peace and in the gradual advent of some sort of socialistic equilibrium"
— William James, The Moral Equivalent of War, 1906
I seem to only be able to reliably send this once per month despite my telling myself I'll somehow do it more frequently — so! Here's a dump of some past collections that brings us up to date. Moving forward, this will be the previous month's collecting. What this means, I hope, is that I will be better able to provide some contextual relevance to the collections.
Seeing as we may have the starts of school and in person work any whatever else delayed yet again, maybe its not the worst thing to provide you with an overwhelming amount of documents to try and peruse here at the beginning of January? This collection of collections is also all just links to the are.na channels where I collect them; not any other simpler downloads.
Let me know if that bothers you — do you prefer to get a folder of PDFs and then have links and images and audio and video or whatever as additions online, or would you rather just got to an are.na collection and browse that way exclusively?
MM027, MM028, MM029, MM030, and MM031 are all linked below!
MM027 was August's collecting
https://www.are.na/kristian-bjornard/mm-mm027

I was still working from my office in Brown center for a week or two of that time, I don't know if that's reflected in what was saved? There are some documents about teaching and design; different sorts of ideas about interfaces — I was working on two different web projects at the time; some ideas around "The Moral Equivalent of War" > for instance, How might drawing down carbon on a massive scale become a more productive way to rally all people around a common cause, to incite the virtues of courage and enduring minor hardship for the greater good? Some ideas about the footprint of electronics, managing oneself, keeping yourself from getting too distracted, and an alternative to CBT — Metacognative Therapy, where you practice just NOT thinking about things!? Whew. A good haul.
MM028 was September's collection
https://www.are.na/kristian-bjornard/mm-mm028

I don't know, this was one of the month's I was really struggling to do any sort of work or thinking, there's not a lot there... Oh, for sure go through Drawdown.org's Climate solutions for Work PDF. And there is a study about how effective house plants are/aren't at removing VOCs. I really enjoyed the essay by Mikhel Proulx "Twenty Years of Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace" in the catalog for "Owerà:ke Non Aié:nahne : Filling in the Blank Spaces." I highly recommend Robin Sloan's Anabel Scheme short story... https://www.robinsloan.com/books/annabel-scheme-serial/
MM029 was from October 2021
https://www.are.na/kristian-bjornard/mm-mm029

there are a lot of weblink in that collection, so browsing via https://www.are.na/kristian-bjornard/mm-mm029 is probably the best for that... The dialectic of destruction and creation; ideas about Web3; poetry; interviews with jazzy guitarists; Carbon Emissions Calculator Methodology; TeX tutorials; Musical collaboration with a neural network; and DIY charcoal making instructions are just a few of the items in the collection…
"an attempt to stifle a difficult conversation made me realize that there are no utopias, not even the community where I had come to feel at home: the type world"
—Agyei Archer
MM030 was November 2021's collecting
https://www.are.na/kristian-bjornard/mm-mm030

Okay, accessibility, biodiversity, Climate change, composting, creator platforms, ethics, Flickr commons, information architecture, interpolation, placebos, renewable energy, Web3, and more! I also published the notes from a lecture I gave last April, and UX Collective picked it up for their "publication" on medium: https://uxdesign.cc/what-is-sustainable-graphic-design-1f84950e05eb
MM031 was December 2021's collecting.
https://www.are.na/kristian-bjornard/mm-mm031

Plants, ecology, animals, non animals, wandering minds, dreamscapes, lath & plaster … Honestly, even though I just collected these, due to my own wandering mind, I have so little clue what this mix is supposed to mean or say about what I was doing the last 5 weeks!?
So! This brings us up to date. 2020 is gone; wait 2021 is gone, and 2022 is here! Hopefully everyone has more time for finding and reading fascinating things that change their lives and practices and worldview forever.
Enjoy, My email & phone are always open for response and conversation.
