Instacart and Shipt shipped AI carts the same week

Two of the biggest names in US grocery delivery shipped AI shopping assistants within a day of each other this month, a major pet retailer's AI bot is already saving it real money, and Revolut's money assistant keeps rolling across Europe. Here's what's new in consumer AI agents.

New launches

Instacart launches Clementine, an AI assistant that builds your cart

Instacart — leading North American online grocery delivery marketplace.

Clementine is an AI shopping assistant integrated into the Instacart app and website that turns a natural-language message, uploaded recipe, or grocery list into a ready-to-buy, personalized cart — ask for a "high-protein easy dinner for two" and get back a recipe plus matching cart items. Launched September 9, 2026 across North America, and distinct from Instacart's older, narrower 2023 search feature ("Ask Instacart"). Instacart has also partnered with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google so grocery conversations begun on ChatGPT, Claude, or Google's AI Mode can be completed as an Instacart order.

How to try it: Open the Instacart app or website and message Clementine with a meal idea, recipe, or grocery list to get a ready-to-buy cart.

Target's Shipt launches Ask Shipt, an AI cart-building assistant

Shipt — Target-owned same-day delivery marketplace operating across the US.

Launched the very same day as Instacart's Clementine, Ask Shipt turns a text prompt, an uploaded recipe, or a photo of a meal into a personalized, ready-to-buy cart within the Shipt app and on Shipt.com. Shipt also lets customers shop through ChatGPT and Claude's agentic commerce features.

How to try it: Open the Shipt app or visit Shipt.com and use Ask Shipt to enter a prompt, upload a recipe, or share a food photo to get a personalized cart.

Top US pet retailer Chewy rolls out AI customer service bot Cai

Chewy — leading US online pet products retailer (NASDAQ: CHWY).

A beta conversational AI customer-service assistant, Cai, has rolled out to a select subset of Chewy's mobile app users (reaching under 15% of traffic as of mid-September 2026), alongside separate AI tools that assist Chewy's live human agents. Chewy's CEO says Cai already resolves roughly a third of common issue categories — orders, returns, and account/membership questions — without human involvement, part of a reported $50M in projected annual AI cost savings.

Revolut's AI money assistant AIR expands to Spain

Revolut (AI by Revolut / AIR) — global neobank/fintech with 50M+ customers, one of Europe's largest fintech unicorns.

Revolut's in-app conversational AI financial assistant AIR — previously rolled out to 13M+ UK customers from April 2026 and to France on September 1 — launched in Spain the same day as part of a gradual wider European rollout. Through a single natural-language chat interface, users get spending analysis, investment-portfolio performance, subscription management, card freeze/unfreeze, travel booking/expense review, and RevPoints guidance instead of navigating menus.

Platform tier: two new small businesses caught running Intercom's Fin

Fitness wearable maker WHOOP deployed Intercom's Fin AI agent to engage prospective buyers when no human agent was available ahead of a major product launch, and reports a 130% increase in attributed sales with up to 84% of inbound sales questions resolved. Chicago prop-trading firm Topstep, which fields 150,000+ support conversations a month, reports 97% AI involvement across its support channels and resolution rates up to 65% since deploying Fin. Both are vendor-published case studies, not independent verification.

New reception findings

Sephora's ChatGPT shopping app

Launched 10 days ago (per this record's own detection date; Sephora's ChatGPT app actually debuted publicly on March 24, 2026): an e-commerce strategist's launch-day analysis found the conversational discovery experience genuinely specific and personalized, but noted in-app purchase remained a "future update," not yet transaction-ready — recommendation-first rather than a complete shopping flow. Sentiment: mixed.

Salesforce Agentforce's "Casey"

Launched 6 days ago (September 2026): Salesforce reports Casey has now handled close to five million customer-service conversations across seven languages and three portals since launch on help.salesforce.com, autonomously resolving 68% without a human for a reported $100M in annualized savings. Sentiment: positive (company-reported scale metrics; no independent user assessment found yet).
