AYTFA Issue #1
Ask your trans friend anything,
How should I act when I see someone who’s visibly trans?
Sometimes I'll see this older homeless man wearing a dress in the park. I’m not sure if I should offer him men’s clothing or not?
There was also once a young woman, who got upset with me for not knowing she was a man because I guess she was wearing men’s clothing?
They looked like women's clothing on her!
How should I react in these situations?
I’m NOT a Karen!
Dear Karen,
Almost all trans healthcare is locked behind paid doors that open in a combination based on your income, insurance, and support system. Some trans folks will never be able to afford or obtain anything beyond clothing (if that) and some will be able to get their dream self and others somewhere in between. This doesn't make anyone any more or less trans than the next person nor does it make them any less deserving than another trans person.
A good way to always ensure clarity and mutual respect is to introduce yourself to a new person with your name and pronouns then ask for theirs in return. Doing this regardless of what 'gender' you think someone is, it is always good to check in as that person might have different pronouns than how they are presenting with their wardrobe.
Next newsletter, we'll be covering the topic of 'How did you know top surgery was right for you?'
If you have a burning question then please email us at [email protected] with it and you might get lucky and see it in the next newsletter!
Sincerely,
Jackson
