On Music and Gentleness
Another of these intermittent messages....
Look: The greatest a capella group in history is The Persuasions. This is not something about which reasonable people can disagree. Take a listen. No argument will ensue.
So you want maximal musical joy? Take the Persuasions, add the greatest Fifties doo-wop song, and then, as the icing on the cake, add … Joni Mitchell. That’s Michael Brecker (!) on sax and Don Alias (!) on drums – the other members of the band, Pat Metheny (!!) and Jaco Pastorius (!!!), are sitting this one out.
Building a bonfire to attract the aliens – maybe not the best idea?
My stuff:
Some years ago I had an idea for a book to be called The Gospel of Life and, in great excitement, wrote up a proposal … but no publisher was interested. So eventually I just posted the proposal on my blog.
Almost fifteen years ago Clay Shirky said that our problem is not information overload, it’s filter failure. I wrote a post about one of the ways I try to filter out nonsense.
I also wrote about how Andy Crouch’s new book says so much of what I would like to say about invitation and repair.
And one about how what matters is not fame but how you become part of someone’s intellectual DNA.
I think y’all know this already, but at my micro.blog page I post mainly pictures, but also the occasional link to what I’m reading. If you’d like to get a digest of that stuff once a week, there’s a “subscribe” link at the top of the page.
I’m thinking this morning of Paul’s counsel to the church at Ephesus: “I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
