Hiatus Hiatus
Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921)
Hello friends! This is, as the title suggests, only a hiatus from my newsletter hiatus. A lot of work is being done under the hood at Comment -- the exciting results of which you’ll see later this year -- and Comment’s editor Anne Snyder and I will be thinking about the role this newsletter might play in Comment 3.0. So stay tuned for that. I’ll be back around the first of July with an update, but I expect regular service on this newsletter to resume sometime in August.
Over the past year Anne, along with the good folks at Plough Quarterly, has been working on a project that I’ve mentioned here before, called Breaking Ground -- a project inspired by hard political times and a still harder pandemic year, and by the general deficit in strong Christian witness in times of trouble. Anne’s colleague Susannah Black has posted a long, thoughtful essay on what they’ve learned through work on the project. Anne’s own thoughts will come later, so keep an eye out for those.
In other news, Laity Lodge is resuming its in-person retreats! (Though with a few health safeguards not necessary in the past.) My dear friend Wesley Hill and I will be leading a late-July retreat called Praying with Jesus. I am so excited about returning to the canyon. Please do consider joining us!
Over at the Hedgehog Review I wrote a post last year on using shears to trim my hedges, and now I have supplemented that with a reflection on using a reel mower. This one is fun, I think.
But mainly I’ve been working away on my critical edition of Auden’s book The Shield of Achilles, so there’s a good bit of activity at the Auden tag on my blog. That will probably continue.
I also continue to post the occasional photo.
On clouds of geographical unknowing
I'll see y'all in July!
