I missed sharing a newsletter last month which reminded me that I do still want to report on what I’m up to even if I’m not sure how regular that might be at this point. That said, here’s some reportage from last month (there’s a TLDR at the end, if that’s helpful).

ANALOG/VIRTUAL

This part of the update will be more for those who are interested in the internal side of how I’m sharing my work. During March I went pretty minimal on the virtual part of my practice. As someone who mostly makes and documents their work digitally, this shift was not intentional. But I decided to follow intuition into what became much more clarity around the distinction between the private and public aspects of my art practice.

I started documenting my work through audio-visual.journal as a website/newsletter combo about a year ago (happy 1 year celebration<3) and as someone who makes video work, does internet research, and consumes lots of art online/via streaming, it’s been an incredibly virtual workflow. It’s also been pretty insular. I have other parts of my practice that are more physical and social, but I wasn’t as engaged with them over this past year. So, March has ended up being a time to reconsider my capacity, and, to some extent, re-invigorate analog and offline parts of my process. I am now questioning the utility of the newsletter/website combo (mostly the website part, at the moment), but for now this past year of experimenting with it will stay up.

2025-01

i’m slowly making my way back to sharing things via newsletter. writing this whole update in words is feeling hard to build up to. but i’m a visual thinker, so i was gonna have to diagram it out anyway.

here are the most recent audio-visual.journal updates/things i want to share:

diagram of audio-visual.journal updates
photo id: handwritten diagram in red dry-erase marker on white dry-erase board reads: “A-V.J Update” in the center. Connections from the center include, “Join Me In The Break” to “Journal” to “Visual Sketches” to “Are.na” to “Radio” to “Monthly Playlist” to “Notes” back to “Journal;” Another connection: “Video work” to “Vimeo.” end id.

some of these things i’ve mentioned in recent newsletters, and some things are new. here are a couple links to get started with checking out what you want to:

On Being On Break

Hello again to witnesses of audio-visual.journal, the internet component of my art practice, where I share my work in the digital public. This journal exists across the virtual void, documenting personal processes of research on audiovisual culture and aesthetics.

I have been on break since August 2024. I decided to share about that in a set of journal entries that allow you to join me in The Break. These entries are an experimental re-visioning of audio-visual.journal as an immersive and participatory space. It documents my recent experience of intentionally stopping public practice, while offering a way for others to self-navigate learning about what a break has to offer. Clicking around, reading, and listening are ways to move through and beyond each entry. You can enter this semi-linear narrative through the entries page of the journal, and in this newsletter I’m sharing a bit of guidance around what you’d discover.

Breaking News

Hey y’all. Here with some updates.

Join Me In The Break

I hinted in the previous newsletter that you could “join me” while I’m on break. Here’s a bit more about that:

Audio-visual.journal now includes an interactive experience called “Join Me In The Break,” which can be found through the entries page of the journal. This project comes from organizational tools I’ve been experimenting with and uses them to create a series of spaces that respond to the question: “what is a break, for audio-visual.journal”? Learn about what I’ve been up to the past couple months by clicking around, reading, listening, and however else you’re called to interact. In doing so, you make “the break” a shared experience.

Breaking Silence

breaking silence to publicly wonder,

am I still moving in silence, or silently moving still?

Note 2 Self / On Break

★ Note 2 Self (and witnesses of audio-visual.journal) ★

We made it through the first iteration of the slow archival project, yay! Surprisingly, the text index was the most fun so that ended on an ideal note. Sharing that time with the contents of the journal has felt like a reflective exercise, and I want to use that shift in energy to transition into a break. Except...I don’t know what a break for audio-visual.journal looks like. So, I’m planning to play with that idea over the next month.

It may mean not sharing anything through the journal or newsletter, but possibly not (?) I am still finding value in having a space to share, and inviting others into what I want to share, for the sake of practice. Maybe there will be less (different?; a lack of?) consistency. I’m not entirely sure, but whatever it will be, I’m calling it a break (version 1.0, I guess). My plan is to return to some sense of rhythm in September.
