COMPLETE: “The invisibility of spouse”
I finished the perzine “The Invisibility of Spouse”! I started working on this a little over a year ago, and I’m glad I let this one percolate. Flipping through the final copy, I’m pleased with how obviously the collages convey the desired meaning. If I jumped into making it when I wrote the text, I don’t think I would’ve arrived at this imagery right away.
Without giving it all away, it’s a personal reflection on how the term “spouse” seems impossible for some (cishet) people to say when queer people (like my spouse and me) use it, and how that feels for me.
The zine will be making its irl debut this September (see below for details). If you’re super excited about getting a copy, you can snag one on ko-fi. As always, I’m open to trading zines/bartering art!
September zine fests!!
I’ll be vending at not one, but TWO zine fests this September!
San Francisco Zine Fest: Sunday, September 6, 11am-5pm at The Hibernia
Bay Area Queer Zine Fest: Sunday, September 27, 11am-5pm at The Oakland Asian Cultural Center
They’re both on Sundays and from 11am-5pm, which feels like it should make them easier to remember. If you’ve never been to a zine fest, these are both really great fests full of lots of friendly people making cool weird stuff, so I recommend making time for them!
WIPs of WIPs
I have several things I’m cooking up, but tbh it might be a while til I complete anything new, given all the prep I have to do for the September zine fests. Here’s a very quick idea of what’s on my brain:
I have a couple funny mini-zines brewing in my brain. Without giving too much away, these cover topics broadly related to nerd culture.
I keep meaning to try my hand at some sewing, but I’m very intimidated by it. Let’s just say I’d like to do some sewing with paper somehow, some way.
I’d really love to make a coloring book zine of pretty soaps as a sequel to I 💖 pretty soaps.
Latest inspo
It’s been a minute since I’ve found a shonen manga that I can’t put down, but Gachiakuta is delivering. If you’re not into manga I absolutely recommend you still check out the artist’s work, since she is a master of character design and fashion (also, lukewarm take: the best shonen mangakas are all women). Her sense of style feels like if Moebius met Japanese street art. The trash-filled, desolate dystopian world of Gachiakuta also kinda reminds me of the worlds Moebius depicted.
My spouse and I have recently gotten into the PBS show Eons (Americans, please support PBS), which is a natural history show focusing on ancient life. We’re learning a lot about the Permian period right now and wow the Great Dying sounds a lot like climate change. They have some shorter videos on YouTube!
