New mini zines!

I’ll keep things short and sweet this time…

Not one, but TWO new zines

I have been very incapable of carving out art time lately, so for the past couple of weeks I decided screw this, it’s art time. Lo and behold, I created a zine each weekend! This was in absolutely no way influenced in part by two Bay Area zine fests’ applications opening soon 😬

As most of you know, I’ve spent a lot of time in the hospital over the past year. This has included two recent visits to the ER (I’m fine now). In my last visit I had the idea for a zine…what’s good reading material for the hospital? I basically wrote the first draft the day I got home. There is a surprise inside this zine, too...

(In case you were wondering, the books I've brought to the hospital recently were actually not the kinds of books I'd recommend. They happened to be what I was reading at the time or had easily within grasp.😅 )

The two new zines!

Inspired by short videos about medical emergency go-bags and niceties to bring for extended hospital stays, I wanted to suggest ways to make a hospital stay more comfortable. Winding up in the hospital is never pleasant, and I'd like to use my experience to help others in some way. Lo, the birth of Hospital self-care essentials you may forget (or really want later).

Both are mini-zines, and both are priced on a sliding scale (starting at a penny + flat international shipping rate).

I’ll be pricing any material remotely educational or geared towards difficult circumstances on a sliding scale going forward. I have several more ideas in this vein, so expect a few more zines like this in the near-ish future. Digital copies of these two (free+, sliding scale) available soon; reply to this email if you’d like a copy!

Latest inspo, pre-Pride Month edition

It’s almost Pride. I have a lot of complicated feelings about Pride this year — ok, the feelings are mostly rage and fear, so maybe not that complicated. Still, to gear up for the month, here are some queer artists you should know about:

  • Nyx Mir chronicles their Long Covid symptoms through the “illmarks” project. The work is haunting but beautiful.
  • Odera Igbokwe paints gorgeous, movement-filled portraits of the African Diaspora with an Afrofuturist bent. They’ve been featured on several book covers and illustration collections.
  • Stevie Springs is a trans chronically ill zine and print maker who makes bold and raw work, often autobiographical, I can’t get enough of.
  • Oscar Zamora Graves is a Bay Area local who you’ve probably seen at Castro Art Mart! He primarily works in collage and assemblage, and he has a very cheeky maximalist Tarot deck constructed largely from images taken from vintage physique magazines.
