Neon Genesis Zine-vangelion

This isn’t about Neon Genesis Evangelion, in case that disappoints you. In case that’s a relief, today I’ll be revealing a zine about an entirely different subject…

Neon Paper! + New zine: “This could’ve been a zine”

The “neon” in the subject line refers to my extreme excitement over acquiring a lot of neon and otherwise vibrantly colored printing paper. 😅 Obviously white printing paper is fine, and a little cheaper, but who doesn’t like an alternative color?!

To celebrate, I’ve decided to print my latest zine exclusively on neon paper, specifically construction cone orange (I am from Michigan, after all; iykyk) and neon green (tbh it looks like brat summer green 😂). Together they have Halloween energy, which is extra fun.

Anyway, you’re probably tired of me talking about paper. So what is this new zine about?! It’s a poem, in a way. You’ll see what I mean.

Three photos spliced together to preview the zine "This could've been a zine". Image on the left: Bright orange mini-zine cover in wavy letters that reads "This could've been a zine". Top left image: neon green pages of the same zine (different copy though) that read: "Every time I mull over something, now I ask...could this be a zine?! This MEETING could've been a zine This EMAIL could've been a zine This PHONE CALL could've been a zine This BILL could've been a zine This INSURANCE PLAN could've been a zine" Bottom left neon green pages read: "This CONTRACT could've been a zine This LAW could've been a zine This WAITING IN LINE could've been a zine This DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT could've been a zine This THERAPY SESSION could've been a zine This CAR RIDE could've been a zine This COMMUTE could've been a zine This FAMILY DINNER could've been a zine This HIGH SCHOOL REUNION could've been a zine This HOUSECLEANING could've been a zine This VET VISIT could've been a zine This MEDICATION could've been a zine"

It’s a little meta, I realize, which may induce eye-rolling. But if you’ve ever hopped on the zine bandwagon, zine-making has the opposite problem of the classic artist’s block: you suddenly have TOO many ideas. Suddenly everything is interesting, oddly; you look at the world differently. It can make you frantic, in a way; frantic to fold up a piece of printer paper into eight equal pieces and get cracking.

This zine was also an act of improvisation and mindfulness. I let myself flow and write the words. Some lines are funny, some are absurd, some are existential, others are meditative. I had a lot of fun with it. I hope you enjoy it!

Snag a copy at SF Zine Fest 2025 (see below), or order one here. Digital version will be available…eventually.

ICYMI: SFZF 2025 is August 31! Virtual BAQZF is September 1-14!

SF Zine Fest 2025 promotional poster. August 31, 2025. City View at the Metreon 11am-5pm. Free admission. Masks required, ASL interpretation provided. sfzinefest.org
  • I’m still pinching myself about this, buuut…I have a half-table (table 34A) at SF Zine Fest 2025 on August 31, 11am-5pm at the Metreon!! This is my first zine fest. I am beyond excited. Pop on by! (Note: face masks are required for the event.)

  • More on this later, but I’ll have a virtual table at Bay Area Queer Zine Fest (BAQZF) September 1-14. Basically I’ll be featured on the website linked above and on social media, and I’ll be extra available for sales and conversations!

Slower schedule in September (maybe)

I hope this is a false alarm, because I rather like writing these newsletters a couple times a month. But I wanted to let everyone know less writing in September might happen because…I got a job! I start at the end of August, so I imagine September will be very hectic for me. I have a backlog of topics I’d like to dive into, so hopefully that will give me something to share with you no matter what 😅

  • You may remember naturalist writing by Arya of Filter Feeder from earlier this year. She’s back with an absolute banger about the beauty and importance of ugly creatures in Studio Ghibli works; read it!

  • Speaking of ugly creatures, I’m obsessed with Louie Zong’s latest album, Oneiric Ocean. It’s twenty minutes of synth that has major bit-tune energy and generates lots of nostalgia even if you didn’t exist during the Cambrian explosion.

  • Continuing the generative AI pessimism, I encountered a follow-up interview with science fiction author Ted Chiang that I found interesting, as well as a piece about how AI slop is disrupting knowledge archiving abilities.
