Alphabettes Soup Launch Events: The Soup is Served!

Welcome to What's Cooking: Alphabettes Soup, an infrequent newsletter sharing updates about the book.

Hello Alphabettes network, Alphabettes Soup contributors, and Alphabettes Soup mailing list subscribers,

On April 1, I traveled to Gráfica Maiaduoro in sunny Porto, Portugal to hold the very first printed and bound copy of Alphabettes Soup: Feminist Approaches to Type: a 2.4-pound, 400-page beauty. We held a soft launch party on Thursday, April 2 at the publisher Bikini Books HQ. Thank you to everyone who attended, bought a copy, ate some cake, and danced. Many, many thanks to “book doula” / publisher Nina Paim and family for being the hosts with the mosts 💚.

The book is arriving in physical and virtual bookstores around the world, including Draw Down Books, Swipe (Toronto), Tique (Antwerp), and Perimeter Books (Melbourne). If you spot a copy in the wild, send me a photo!

Several soft launch events also took place in May:

In Portland, Oregon on May 12, Alphabettes Soup book designer and typographic chef Tereza Bettinardi shared her work and process as a PSUGD Kemeny Lecture Series speaker! Books were sold by Volumes Design Library where there are still a few copies available.

In Brussels on May 26, Alphabettes Soup author Garine Gokceyan organized an amazing event, Without A Center, With Many Symposium, which included talks by several Alphabettes Soup contributors, and a soup-lunch launch!

At ATypI Stanford on May 27–30, the Letterform Archive sold [out of] books during the conference. Laura made beautiful bookmarks featuring some of her Alphabettes headers as takeaways. Swoon!

This month, we’ve got several other events cooking:

In Berlin on Friday, June 12 (yes, today or tomorrow, depending on when you open this email), at A-Z Presents Countersession #8, join publisher Nina Paim and Alphabettes Soup authors Sol Matas, Tanya George, Zainab Marvi, Caro Giovagnoli, and more. Books will be available for sale, get them while they’re hot 🔥!

In New York on Friday, June 26, at the Typographics Festival hosted at Cooper Union, I’ll be giving the talk, Care and Complexity: Recipes for Alphabettes Soup. Books will also be available in the public Book Fair all weekend (or until they sell out🔥).

On Saturday, June 27 in NYC, join me and many authors and contributors to celebrate the book’s launch with a party at the Type Directors Club. It’s free but RSVP is required. There will be cake, of course 🍰💚📚!

📍 We’ll share future events in the Fall and beyond again soon. Want to host an Alphabettes Soup book event in your city? Reach out ([email protected]) and let’s make it happen.

💕 Finally, thank you again to all of our sponsors, individual donors, and pre-orderers. Your early and ongoing support helped us bring this pot to boil 💕.
