Alberta Basketry News - April 2025
It is hard to believe it has been almost a month since Weaving Connections!
We would like to send out a heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out and wove baskets (and built brooms and chairs!) with us at Weaving Connections Alberta this weekend. With over 90 weavers passing through, this was our biggest year yet!

Thank you to Tiffany, our planning committee, and all our lovely volunteers who set up and maintained the greenhouse over the weekend!

On Friday night at Weaving Connections, we held our very first AGM as a guild. We brainstormed ideas about the future of our guild and elected our new board of directors: Mia Coco, Cathie Harper, Tania Kristensen, Kate Mullin, Lauren Rosinski, Tiffany Watson, and Freyja Ulveland.

A Note from Freyja: Prime willow harvesting season is coming to an end, which means bark harvesting season is almost here! I don’t have any experience harvesting birch bark, but last year I harvested willow bark and made buff willow for the first time. Maryann recommended that we wait until the leaves are about an inch long, and this seemed to work well. I was able to harvest bark until just after the summer solstice last year. If you are curious about harvesting bark, I hope you will join us for the Edmonton Open Weave!
Every year, Rae Hunter shares a wonderful guide on making a willow whistle in our Facebook Group. I hope she doesn’t mind me carrying on the tradition and including it here ;)
