Nvidia pays Poolside $6 billion to license model factory, hire 109 engineers

Reuters

Nvidia agreed to pay roughly $6 billion for a non-exclusive license to Poolside's "Model Factory" training stack and to hire 109 of the startup's core engineers, alongside a separate $1 billion equity investment at a $12 billion pre-money valuation. The engineers and technology will feed Nvidia's Nemotron open-weight model effort. Both companies stress it is neither an acquisition nor an acquihire, and Poolside continues to operate independently with its leadership intact.

Why it matters

Nvidia is moving from selling the picks and shovels to building frontier-scale models itself, positioning open-weight Nemotron against DeepSeek, Kimi and Qwen. That puts the largest supplier in the industry into partial competition with the labs that are also its biggest customers.
