Governor Abbott directed PUCT and ERCOT to finish a comprehensive verification/audit of data centers in the interconnection process before projects move forward. Fail the requirements, lose the grid connection. ERCOT is staring at more than 474 GW of requests — over five times Texas peak demand — with roughly 90% of them from data centers. At the same time, NBC reports AI data-center construction is being slowed by a very physical shortage: tens of thousands of missing fiber-optic installers.

Data Center Watch, shared with NBC, finds at least 75 projects delayed or blocked in the first quarter alone — about $130 billion of planned investment, roughly matching all of 2025. Active opposition groups more than doubled to 833 across 49 states. This looks less like a temporary backlash and more like a permanent permitting constraint.

Etsy cuts ~12% of staff after a revenue beat — and says it is not an AI replacement story.
About 220 roles are going. Revenue was up, net income swung to a loss, and CEO Kruti Patel Goyal publicly denied that cost-cutting or AI drove the restructure. The same memo says AI is changing how work gets done. That contradiction is the story: AI-era headcount language is getting more careful, not clearer.

Nearly 1,900 U.S. public schools sit within a mile of a data center.
Brown University researchers, reported by The 74, count 1,878 public schools within a mile of an existing or approved facility. California alone has 602. Forthcoming Brown work also reports lower math scores at closer schools. Treat the score finding carefully until the paper is out, but the proximity map alone makes AI infrastructure a child-environment issue.

Schools are turning AI loose on mastery transcripts beyond A–F grades.
