Transparency rules go live, the grid math hardens, and clinical AI splits

Five days into EU AI Act transparency enforcement, the public record is no longer about upcoming deadlines. It is about disclosure, labels, and fines. Beside that process clock, the IEA puts hard numbers on data-center electricity, BLS maps a decade of AI/IT winners and losers, and independent clinical tests show frontier general-purpose models beating specialized tools while ambient scribes save minutes in one system and almost nothing in another.

EU AI transparency rules are now being enforced — five days in

What happened. From 2 August 2026, the European Commission’s AI Office and national authorities began enforcing AI Act transparency duties. Chatbots and similar systems must tell people they are dealing with AI, not a human. Deepfakes and certain other AI-generated content must be labelled and carry machine-readable marks. The Commission published a first list of more than 180 organisations signing the Code of Practice on transparency of AI-generated content. Company fines can reach €15 million or 3% of global annual turnover. This is the transparency clock, not the later high-risk product-obligations calendar.

What to watch. Day five of live enforcement is a process signal, not proof deepfakes are solved. The measurable record is labeling compliance, complaint volume, national enforcement capacity, and whether platforms actually disclose AI interaction at scale.

IEA: data centres could nearly double electricity use by 2030

What happened. IEA Electricity 2026 expects global electricity demand to grow about 3.6% a year over 2026–2030. In the United States, rapid data-centre expansion is expected to make up about half of near-term demand growth, with more than 420 TWh of added U.S. electricity use over five years. Separately, the Energy and AI Base Case estimates global data-centre electricity at about 415 TWh in 2024 (~1.5% of world electricity), roughly doubling to about 945 TWh by 2030 (just under 3%).

What to watch. A global share near 3% is not a free pass on local congestion, reliability, water, or who pays for upgrades. The measurable record is interconnection queues, flexibility investment, clean-power additionality, and rate design.

BLS maps the AI/IT decade: software up, routine office support down

What happened. A July 16 BLS Economics Daily brief on the 2024–34 projections says rising IT and AI adoption is expected to boost computer and mathematical occupations while damping several office roles. Projected winners include data scientists (+33.5% / +82,500), information security analysts (+28.5% / +52,100), and software developers (+15.8% / +267,700). Projected declines include customer service representatives (−5.5% / −153,700) and several admin, claims, and clerical roles.

What to watch. This is decade-ahead projection data, not a same-week layoff tally. The measurable record is whether actual employment tracks these paths and whether transition support follows the softest roles.

Frontier LLMs beat specialized clinical tools — ambient scribes stay uneven

What happened. A Nature Medicine evaluation found frontier general-purpose large language models outperformed specialized clinical AI tools across MedQA, HealthBench, and 100 real clinical queries, with 12 U.S. clinicians providing 1,800 annotations. A separate npj Digital Medicine perspective on ambient AI scribes finds heterogeneous results: Mass General Brigham reported median EHR time down 5.6 minutes per appointment in one analysis, Permanente about 18 seconds, and Intermountain no statistically significant productivity gain.

What to watch. Clinical AI and ambient documentation are not uniform benefit categories. Procurement needs setting-specific measurement, not vendor demos alone.
