☿ Hermetic Principle #5: RHYTHM 🎶
Always *try* to stay on beat. Repetitions help.

The Principle of Rhythm 🥁
∴ Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides; all things rise and fall; the pendulum-swing manifests in everything; the measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left; rhythm compensates.
All of existence moves in cycles — tides, seasons, the rise and fall of civilizations, the ebb and flow of emotions. When things swing to one extreme, they inevitably swing back. 'Rhythm compensates' means every frenzied high is balanced by a correspondingly dull low.
In order to produce music or learn dance, you must know rhythm. Though like in jazz, you must also know when to stop, or pause. Hermetic Masters can 'neutralize' the rhythmic swing through an act of will and transcendence. The Kybalion calls this 'the Law of Neutralization' — the Master polarizes themselves at the desired pole and refuses to participate in the backward swing by raising their vibration above the ordinary plane of consciousness. Abiding such higher desired mental states (e.g. peacefulness, abundance, confidence) in the face of external ills requires a steadfastness of purpose that has no choice but to providence long-term boons.
SCHOLARLY NOTE
The teaching that Masters can transcend Rhythm while remaining subject to Cause and Effect reflects a nuanced metaphysics: the principles are hierarchical, with higher principles modifying but not abolishing lower ones.
PRACTICAL APPLICATION
Observing personal emotional cycles without attachment. Recognizing that periods of low energy or inspiration will naturally be followed by renewal 🌅. Planning creative work and major decisions around natural rhythms rather than fighting them. Meditation as the art of finding the still center of the pendulum 🕉️.
Stoicism 🏛️
Ekpyrosis — cyclical destruction and rebirth of the universe — embodies cosmic Rhythm. Stoics taught equanimity in the face of Fortune's wheel.
Buddhism 🪷
Samsara — the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth — is Rhythm at the grandest scale. Meditation helps observe rhythms without being swept away.
Taoism ☯️
Wu wei means aligning with natural rhythms rather than fighting them. All things flourish, but each returns to its root.
Modern Parallels 🔬
Oscillation is fundamental to physics: pendulums, electromagnetic waves, circadian rhythms, planetary orbits, the expansion and contraction of the universe.
