Opposites attract.

The Principle of Polarity ☯️

∴ Everything is Dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes meet; all truths are but half-truths; all paradoxes may be reconciled.

What we think of as 'opposites' — hot and cold, light and dark, love and hate — are not truly separate things but different degrees of the same thing. There is no precise point where 'hot' ends and 'cold' begins; they exist on a single spectrum.

By understanding Polarity, one learns the 'art of polarization' — consciously shifting mental states along continuums. The Kybalion teaches that a Hermetist can 'transmute Evil into Good' by sliding with grace along the polarity rather than trying to forcefully bury what seems negative or troublesome. Polarity emanates Gender into beings to create a living engine of reunion.

SCHOLARLY NOTE

This principle contains what many consider the deepest teaching: 'All truths are but half-truths; all paradoxes may be reconciled.' This suggests that absolute statements are always incomplete, and that apparent contradictions dissolve when viewed from a higher perspective on the spectrum.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

When experiencing fear, the Hermetist emboldens his gut and consciously summons courage; he understands that one needs the other to move and this experience is vital and rare. This 'mental alchemy' ⚗️ applies to any pair of mental states: sadness/joy, ignorance/wisdom, weakness/strength. They may be transmuted by recognizing their integral relationship 🜃.

Stoicism 🏛️

Reframing — viewing misfortunes as opportunities — directly employs Polarity. Marcus Aurelius: 'The impediment to action advances action.'

Buddhism 🪷

The Middle Way avoids extremes. The Heart Sutra dissolves apparent opposites: form is emptiness, emptiness is form.

Taoism ☯️

Yin and Yang are the quintessential expression — complementary opposites that interpenetrate. Each contains the seed of the other.

Jungian Psychology 🪞

Enantiodromia — things tend to turn into their opposites. The Shadow represents the polar opposite of the persona; integrating it leads to wholeness.
