Greetings, Wrecking Crew,

I hope this newsletter finds you well.

This really is a glorious time of year on the 43rd Parallel, or at least in the Vermont portion of it. It’s warm out but not hot, and even when the humidity is a little high, it’s not sticky. The nights are cool and good for sleeping.

Fruit is in abundance, as are vegetables. I’ve eaten so many of them lately, grown within just a few miles. Corn, peppers, onions, zucchini and summer squash, lettuce, tomatoes, watermelon, peaches, plums, blueberries. The list goes on.

We’re even getting the early apples. I ate a Yellow Transparent — my first apple this season — and I shoulda known better because once you pick a Yellow Transparent, it immediately bruises and turns to mush. Still, I hadda have one. It’s sort of like sleeping on a train for four days; I’m glad I did it, I have no regrets, I probably don’t need to do it again. (But, ya never know!)

The other day as I was toodling around in the Wendomobile, thoroughly enjoying this gorgeous place I call “home,” I thought, “what do I call this time of year?” Other people have come up with their own names and some of them have stuck.

The one that popped into my head: The Summer Downhill.

We are descending into Autumn. And it IS a valley. It’s already begun getting darker. The shadows are lengthening and the light is changing. We’re harvesting now to prepare for quieter times. Things will end. Autumn is traditionally a good time to grieve. For introspection.

But we’re not there, yet. We’re just heading downhill into the valley.

Meanwhile, there’s still time for fun and play.

Last night I went with a dear friend to Marigold in Brattleboro (VT) to see two really great, local, power-pop bands: Couch Boy and The Vermen. The music was fabulous, I saw old friends, and I made a few new ones.

I’m so thankful for music, people who play music, and people who share that music with the world. I’m also thankful for WFMU and Give the Drummer Radio, because then I can present music to you on my radio show.
