Scattered rain all week — check your gutters
Monday is a soaker at 90%, and rain chances continue through Thursday and Friday. Before the week hits: check your gutters. When gutters clog and overflow, water pools directly against your foundation. According to home repair data, foundation repairs from water damage routinely run $5,000 to $25,000 — and most homeowners insurance policies won’t cover it if deferred maintenance is the cause. Clear any debris buildup from gutters and make sure downspouts discharge at least 4 feet from your foundation. While you’re at it, check that your sump pump kicks on — now is exactly the wrong time to find out it doesn’t.

“My kid asked if the construction on Main Street is ever going to end. I told him by the time it does he’ll be in college. He said ‘so never.’ We have a very realistic child.”

“I filled up my car, watched gas prices drop $0.08 the next morning, and spent the rest of the week pointing out gas stations to my husband like I am somehow owed something.”

Babe Ruth got married in Ellicott City.
In October 1914, a 19-year-old Babe Ruth married his first wife, Helen Woodford, at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church right here in Ellicott City. Ruth had just finished his first year in professional baseball — signed by the Baltimore Orioles that spring and traded to the Red Sox by summer. He never lived here, but for one October day, one of the most famous athletes in American history called 21043 his destination. St. Paul’s still stands on Frederick Road.
