Happy Sunday, 21043!
If you were one of the lucky ones at Merriweather yesterday for Springsteen and the Foo Fighters, I hope your voice is back by Tuesday. 🎸
Good news: it's sunshine all week. Bad news: two homes got broken into in broad daylight on Wednesday, and Montgomery Run Road made the crime report for a third straight week.
Also inside: a bridge closing on Merryman Street, a tax credit a third of Maryland homeowners never claimed, and the world's first underwater power plant (it was in our backyard).
Let's dive in:

Neighbor Tip of the Week

💰 Homestead Tax Credit could lower your property tax
About a third of Maryland primary residences don't have a Homestead Tax Credit application on file. Once approved, it caps how much your taxable assessment can climb each year. It's a one-time form with no deadline, but it isn't retroactive, so every year you skip it is money gone. Check in 2 minutes: search your address in SDAT's real property database and scroll to "Homestead Application Status." Apply here.

"Halloween is four weeks out and the house on the corner already has a fog machine, a sound system, and a guy in a mask on the porch. I'm 80% sure the guy is real."

"My kid asked why we can't go to the Main Street fudge shop every weekend. I said because Dad has to pay the property taxes. He said 'what if we just don't.' Honestly, bold strategy."

The world's first underwater power plant was built on the Patapsco.
In 1907, Bloede Dam started generating electricity on the Patapsco near Ilchester. Instead of a separate powerhouse, the generators sat inside the dam itself, under the spillway, making it the world's first submerged hydroelectric plant. Owner Victor Bloede built it to power Catonsville and Ellicott City, and his other company made glue for postage stamps. It went quiet around 1930 and was finally removed in 2018 so fish could swim upstream again.
