You're not poor, you're broke
This has come up again. Why words matter when talking about money.
The pandemic has shown us many things but several have been conversations around money including how much words matter when describing your or other people’s financial situation.
If you’re new here, The Budgette (aka me) has a policy of never shaming people about their spending habits. I’m not saying you can’t judge in your own mind (I don’t control you) but unless you’re living their life, we can’t possibly understand their decisions.
Ok, except billionaires. They don’t get a pass. Judge them hard.
The reason I bring this up is because of the ‘poor vs. broke’ conversation that I’ve seen creeping up again in the last couple of years and I’ve had a few conversations with friends about it. Plus, the federal government has ended the Canada Recovery Benefit and is transitioning to a new program, the Canada Worker Lockdown Benefit, with $300 a week. This had led to the inevitable grumblings about handouts and lazy people. Personally, I’m here for government benefits. Use them if you need them.
