So taxes. It’s the season so let’s discuss taxes for single people.
Here’s the not-great news: there aren’t specific tax credits or deductions for single taxpayers. Yup, thanks to the federal opposition being concerned that men might be discouraged from getting married, the basic personal exemption was cut in half for single people when the idea of taxes was introduced. (I wrote about this a couple of years ago and I’m still mad.)
Now, marriage or a common-law relationship could give you the option to receive tax benefits and spousal transfers. Where it gets worth it (and personally, unfair) is in retirement, which again, you can read about in the above links.
