Resourcing Practice for Winter - somatic support for hibernation.
brought to you by Tender Being with Harriet
Dear ,

In this newsletter you'll find:
  • Winter Solstice Practice
  • Ways to work with me in the coming months, including free Hibernation Meditation and Winter Solstice events
  • Some recommendations from me of stuff I've been learning from, enjoying and some actions you can take
Winter Solstice Seasonal Practice

I find that Winter for me feels like a season of being pulled in two very opposite directions.

In one direction, nature is signalling to us to rest - the shorter days, the longer dark nights. The invitation to hibernate is here.

And yet in another way I feel the rush of pressure and activation (and overstimulation) of the 'holiday' season, with flashing lights all around, adverts turned up to max volume, and social pressures rising.

The Winter Solstice invitation is to engage in the
Resourcing Practice

Leading on from our last newsletter, where we explored Audre Lorde's concept about how self care is political, I want to offer another self-care based practice. We are going to be better able to respond, as well as rest, if we can feel resourced through this (potentially intense) period.

I have created a recording for a very short mindfulness practice around 'Resourcing' - finding an internal, body-based resource to ground ourselves in the moment. This practice can be an invitation to invite small amounts of down regulation and settling, that will hopefully support us in small ways through this season.

If you want to connect with a group of us to mark Winter Solstice on Saturday 21st, you can do so by joining the Community Membership in Substack. It's been lovely to have a base there for our Events and Practices and it's Pay what you can (including free spaces), so it is financially accessible to all.

I will be sharing my own reflections on Winter Solstice on the podcast soon, as well as the prompts for you to use in whatever way feels supportive.

🌿 Free Hibernation Meditation Event! January 4th

I am excited to be running a free Hibernation Meditation event (with a request that those who have resources donate to a mutual aid and/or fundraiser in place of a ticket fee). This will be a wintery EcoNidra meditation and more info can be found on the Eventbrite page here.

🌿 Free Spaces for Practice Clients in January Resilience Toolkit Group Session

As part of my training with Lumos Transforms, I am running two practice Group sessions - one in December that is full, and one in January which has 2 spots remaining. If you'd like to join then please do let me know as soon as you can.

🌿 Community Membership on Substack

The Membership is available on a 'pay what you can' basis, so whatever your budget you can join us!

Inside you'll find:
  • The new home for all Celtic Wheel Events, we will be gathering for Winter Solstice on 21st December - there's still time to sign up and join us.
  • Monthly drop-in Mindfulness Sessions happening on the second Saturday of every month.
  • An invitation to engage with a seasonal Home Practice every month, as well as the opportunity to connect and discuss with me and others about what you notice, any questions or insights.
If you'd like to join us, we'd love to welcome you into the community - any questions you can simply reply to this email and get in touch.

Currently I am focusing a lot on training - which means that the rest of this year is a little quieter in terms of formal offerings. There will be more to emerge in the new year.

My Recommendations

As a new part of the newsletter, I'd love to know any thoughts you have on these. Any you have also enjoyed, or if you check them out what you think of them. Any requests for different types of recommendations/resources? Any suggestions you'd offer back - I'm all ears!

And as I said last time, these aren't intended as a reading / to do list - just a little insight into the stuff I'm exploring and an invitation to join me if any of it peaks your interest!

Here are my recommendations for this newsletter:

📚 Book - Unconditional Parenting by Alfie Khon
I came across this as part of training and research, and it is of course very relevant right now because of becoming a parent. But even if I wasn't a parent, I still think it's fascinating in terms of thinking of the ways that we were parented. The ways that society and our early childhood experiences can shape our understanding of ourselves. If you were given 'time outs' or 'put on the naughty step', you might find this a very interesting if a bit confronting read.

📺 TV- Brothers Sun, Netflix
This is a rewatch for me. Before I was ill, I would very rarely rewatch things. Always pushing onto the next, feeling that I should always be watching something 'new'. From both my limited capacity, as well as some brilliant role modelling from my partner (who is a prolific rewatcher of things) I have started to enjoy revisiting shows I've already watched. This is an absolute belter, very action packed (possibly not the softest on the nervous system!) but brilliant acting and story telling.

🎧 Podcast - The Art of Deep Listening, Ann Weiser Cornell on the Gently Used Human Podcast
I was so engrossed listening to this podcast (appropriately so maybe...) Ann is a huge name and really promoted the practice of 'Focusing', which is a somatic practice that I am really passionate about and often include in my 121 and group work. She is an expert in listening to ourselves and our bodies, as well as listening to one another, and it was an absolute joy to listen to this episode. The only problem was that I listened while feeding my son to sleep and nearly woke him up again with my vigorous head nodding at some points!
