TGT - 5th October 2026 - James Bond & The Beatles
Of course neither James Bond nor The Beatles ‘began’ on 5th October 1962. The Beatles had formed years earlier, with Lennon & McCartney first meeting in 1957. Ian Fleming wrote his first Bond spy novel, Casino Royale, at his ‘Goldeneye’ winter home in Jamaica over the course of just one month in early 1952.
But it is a remarkable coincidence that the first Bond film and the first single by The Beatles were both released on a largely unknowing public on the same day, especially given how long-lasting and impactful both would become on the cultural zeitgeist over the following six decades and more.
As a result, the vast majority of students will likely be familiar with both (but there’s always some who aren’t). But discussions can continue in more depth. It’s worth noting Bond’s infamous 3-word introduction of himself is right there in the film’s opening scene (along with ubiquitous cigarette smoking) and that neither were the instant success their eventual longevity might suggest. Also if we were to try and measure and compare their impact, how could we go about doing that?
