Some have called it the greatest cheating scandal in sport, especially when you consider the potential dangers involved to drivers, spectators and track crew. On 28th September 2026, Nelson Pique Jnr deliberately crashed his car at the Singapore Grand Prix in order that his Renault teammate Fernando Alonso could win the race from an unlikely 15th position.

Interesting angles for discussion include when it’s ok to not follow the orders of those in authority and the fact that the Renault team, Alonso and Pique all seemed to escape without much in the way of punishment. Team boss Flavio Briatore was handed a lifetime ban from motorsport, which he managed to overturn in court within 5 years.
