…that scientists have invented a new type of “super steel”?

Regular stainless steel is known for being corrosion-resistant, but that resistance has limits. The chromium in stainless steel forms a protective oxide layer under normal conditions, but that layer can undergo further oxidation and degrade in high voltage electrochemical processes.
This means that for applications like electrolysis systems that use desalinated seawater or acidic solutions, titanium components coated with gold or platinum are used instead, making the systems extremely expensive.
But now, researchers at the University of Hong Kong have developed a process that creates a second protective layer on the steel, based on manganese. “Initially, we did not believe it,” says Dr. Kaiping Yu, because normally manganese is thought to inhibit stainless steel’s corrosion resistance. Their discovery “cannot be explained by current knowledge in corrosion science.”
This discovery could reduce the cost of materials for electrolyzers by 40 times.
