DID YOU KNOW…?
…that scientists just discovered a previously unknown damage mechanism in metals?
Until now, it was assumed that shear loading did not increase damage in materials - so when failure occurred, no one knew why.
But now, researchers have discovered that “stiff particles”-nonmetallic contaminants-create voids that grow under shear, weakening the metal and ultimately causing failure.
